Extract fan cleaning for sites in Chalk Farm

About our extract fan cleaning in Chalk Farm

We’ve been trading since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and full insurance. If you have grease around the motor and its mounts and a fan left out of previous cleans, we can help.

In London, few kitchens can spare a day to close, so work in Chalk Farm is normally booked for the night or the early hours. Before the clean, we agree loading, parking and roof access with whoever manages the building.

Think of the report as the system’s health record: a dated account with pictures of everything we did. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal and sits alongside the report.

Do you need extract fan cleaning in Chalk Farm?

A greasy fan in Chalk Farm is fuel at the end of the duct. If grease in the duct catches, the fan and its housing can feed the fire, and a hot, struggling motor does not help.

The symptoms we’re asked about most include:

  • An extract fan with no cleaning record
  • An extract fan that vibrates or rattles
  • Less air being pulled from the kitchen
  • Grease escaping from the fan outlet

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Silas Church or elsewhere in Chalk Farm, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Chalk Farm: your questions answered

Which fire authority looks after Chalk Farm?

London Fire Brigade is the fire and rescue service for Chalk Farm. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Chalk Farm out of term?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. Food Standards Agency records list about 69 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Chalk Farm. Just call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with your term dates and we will plan around them.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not normally. We need the work area to ourselves while we are on site, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

Which accreditations do you hold?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

The report shows them clearly. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.

Can you fix a fan that’s worn out?

Anything beyond cleaning is flagged, with what we found. We can repair or replace it, and there’s a 24/7 emergency callout for breakdowns.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We carry full insurance, and we have been trading since 2009.

What happens if it’s left?

A fan that fails mid-service can stop a kitchen cooking. Many fan problems start with grease, so keeping it clean is part of keeping it running. We also offer a 24/7 emergency callout if the worst happens. Leaving it on a busy London site only adds to the work.

We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

The process

Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes an hour or two for most single fans. Managed blocks in London often need contractors booked in ahead, and we are happy to deal with the agent directly for a site in Chalk Farm.

  1. We locate the fan and plan how to reach and isolate it.
  2. It’s isolated so it cannot run while we work.
  3. Grease is scraped off the impeller blades and casing.
  4. Blades, housing and surrounds are degreased with care around the electrics.
  5. It’s closed up, run, checked and photographed for the report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Getting a quote

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before work begins.

Advice

How we price extract fan cleaning

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • How easy every part is to reach
  • How big the system is

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Asking for a quote

What to send for a quote:

  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks

Quotes are quick. Send a few details and photos, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

When something else is needed

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what extract fan cleaning will not do:

  • A fan that’s too small for the system (a design question)
  • Wiring faults to the fan
  • An impeller that’s bent or split

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think before you book.

What the work covers

  • Fan housings
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Axial fans
  • In-line fans
  • Discharge points

Between visits

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Check filters are seated before cooking
  • Flag smoke lingering at the canopy
  • Check the report shows the fan was cleaned
  • Keep records of every fan clean

When we’ve finished, the fan is reassembled and run. If anything seems wrong, from vibration to wear, we note it, so you can plan any repair.

A change in how the fan sounds is worth noting. New noise or vibration often means grease is building on the impeller and early action can save a repair.

Chalk Farm kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 105 pubs, bars and clubs and about 38 hotels and B&Bs across Chalk Farm and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Kitchens in Chalk Farm get their food hygiene inspections from Camden council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. London Fire Brigade covers Chalk Farm. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

If you run a café or takeaway near Kentish Town West station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Haverstock School or anywhere near Chalk Farm, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.
