How we handle ductwork cleaning in Woking

Once air leaves the canopy, it travels through ductwork that most people never see. Every horizontal run and vertical riser collects grease along the way, and that’s where a kitchen fire can travel. We clean it from the inside, through access panels, to BESA TR19® Grease. The work covers vertical risers, bends and junctions and multi-storey ducts, and common reasons people get in touch are gaps where access panels were never fitted and readings above 200 microns from a grease thickness test.

In the busier parts of Woking, kitchens are often on the ground floor with flats or offices above, with risers that run up the back of the building to roof level. A riser needs proper access to be cleaned top to bottom, and anything we can’t reach goes on the report.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Inside an extract duct: heavy deposits on the left, cleaned metal on the right

Looking after it afterwards

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Book the next clean before the recommended date
  • Report any grease dripping from duct joints
  • Leave a way through to the access panels
  • File each certificate and photo report in the maintenance log

Every panel we open is refitted when we finish, and the surrounding area is left clean. Grease and dirty water are contained and removed.

Run the extract the whole time the kitchen is cooking. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.

Woking: your questions answered

Which environmental health team covers Woking?

In Woking, it’s Woking council that carries out food hygiene inspections. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Can a school canteen extract in Woking be done out of term time?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 18 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Woking. You can call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with the dates the site is empty.

How often should kitchen ducts be cleaned?

BESA guidance sets minimum intervals by daily cooking hours: every 3 months for 12 to 16 hours, 6 months for 6 to 12 hours and 12 months for 2 to 6 hours. Measured grease sets the real interval.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line, for problems that cannot wait. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

What happens if there are not enough access panels?

Every reachable section is cleaned and the rest recorded. Fitting extra access panels is the usual answer, and we can do that for you.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we will propose a schedule with a fixed quote.

How much notice should we give?

For planned work, earlier is better, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and we’ll quote them together.

What we are called out for in Woking

A vertical riser can run up several floors. Grease clings to the walls and can run down to the base as liquid grease runs down. Panels along the riser make proper cleaning possible.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Proof of duct cleaning for the insurer
  • Thick deposits at the bottom of a vertical duct
  • A rancid smell from the extract duct
  • Years of grease along the duct floor

For kitchens close to Woking station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

What your quote should include

  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • Whether a written report and photos are included
  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

Our hiring checklist

Different parts, different methods

Bends and transitions

Grease tends to pile up at elbows. It’s scraped out and degreased, and test it before and after.

Multi-storey and shared buildings

In a shared building, the duct links the kitchen to other spaces, which makes keeping it clean all the more important. The paperwork suits landlords and managing agents.

The process

We’re used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. The visit itself takes from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access. In the busier parts of Woking, parking and roof access are the main things to plan.

  1. We map the duct route and check where the access panels are.
  2. Grease readings are taken at set points along the duct.
  3. Access panels are opened and heavy deposits scraped out by hand.
  4. Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
  5. Post-clean readings and photos go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

Getting a quote

For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll normally have a quote within one working day.

How we price ductwork cleaning

You’ll get a fixed price before any work starts. It takes into account:

  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • What state the system is in
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.

Helping us quote

What to send for a quote:

  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

To help us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few pictures and any previous report or certificate. Then call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Kitchen extracts in Woking

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 88 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 40 takeaways and sandwich shops in and around Woking, up to about a mile and a half out. Behind every canopy among them is a run of ductwork that collects grease out of sight. Fire safety in Woking falls to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Food hygiene inspections in Woking are the job of Woking council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
