Ductwork cleaning in Thorney Island

How we handle ductwork cleaning in Thorney Island

Once air leaves the canopy, it travels through ductwork that most people never see. Every horizontal run and vertical riser collects grease along the way, and that is where a kitchen fire can travel. We clean it from the inside, through access panels, to BESA TR19® Grease. We’re often asked to deal with smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork and duct runs with no cleaning record, across access panels, vertical risers and bends and junctions.

Somewhere as small as Thorney Island, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Do you need ductwork cleaning in Thorney Island?

A vertical riser can run up several floors. Grease clings to the walls and can run down to the base, where it can pool. Access along its height is needed to clean it properly.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Readings above 200 microns from a grease thickness test
  • Ductwork that has never been cleaned
  • Proof of duct cleaning for the insurer
  • Heavy grease at the base of a riser

Church and community hall kitchens, near The Parish Church of St Nicholas or anywhere around Thorney Island, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Questions to ask before you book

When something else is needed

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what ductwork cleaning will not do:

  • Undersized or badly laid-out ducts
  • Parts of the duct with no way in
  • An extract fan that has stopped working

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will tell you honestly.

Grease, kitchens and Thorney Island

Thorney Island lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 6 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Thorney Island. Wherever those kitchens cook under a canopy, the horizontal runs and risers need cleaning as well as the hood. Fire safety in Thorney Island falls to West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Warblington Castle, about 2.1 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses near Thorney Island; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions. A hospital like Havant War Memorial Hospital, about 3.2 miles north-west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Thorney Island is about 4 miles south-east of Havant, in West Sussex. Wherever you are in the PO10 postcode area, we cover ductwork cleaning for commercial sites. Thorney Island is one of 371 towns, villages and districts in West Sussex we cover for ductwork cleaning. Our Portsmouth page covers sites nearby (7 miles or so).

Thorney Island questions

Can you come to Thorney Island after we close?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. That way a site in Thorney Island doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we will book within them.

Which fire service covers Thorney Island?

Fire safety enforcement in Thorney Island is handled by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

How often should kitchen ducts be cleaned?

It depends mostly on daily cooking hours. Kitchens cooking 12 to 16 hours a day need it at least every 3 months, while lighter use can go longer.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, fully. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it, for sites that check contractor safety.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

How much does ductwork cleaning cost in Thorney Island?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

What do you do with what you remove?

It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go, so it does not spread.

What do you need from me for a quote?

The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, along with a few photos and any previous report.

The process

We’re used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access. The timing of a visit to Thorney Island is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
  2. We measure grease thickness at set points before cleaning.
  3. Access panels are opened and heavy deposits scraped out by hand.
  4. Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
  5. Readings and pictures are repeated and any section we couldn’t reach is recorded.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and photos, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

For landlords and multi-site operators

If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

What affects the cost of ductwork cleaning

Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • What state the system is in
  • How easy every part is to reach
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • The number of sites or systems

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

What to send for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:

  • The postcode and the type of business
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • A few general shots of the system
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

To get a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We normally come back within one working day.

Between visits

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Flag drips from the duct straight away
  • Make sure filters are seated properly
  • Diarise the next duct clean
  • Check readings when the menu changes

The report names every part of the duct that couldn’t be reached, with the reason. We can fit access panels so those sections are cleaned next time.

Extra access panels mean more of the duct gets cleaned each time. Grease you can reach is grease that gets removed.

What the work involves, part by part

Attenuators and discharge

Near the discharge, the air has cooled the most, which can mean heavier deposits. It’s tested and cleaned along with the rest.

Bends and transitions

Grease tends to pile up at elbows. It’s scraped out and degreased, and test it before and after.
