Ductwork cleaning for sites in Stanwell

Why deal with it now?

BESA guidance says grease shouldn’t exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans. Anywhere that reaches 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning. Leaving the duct makes those limits harder to keep to. A site near Stanwell that has to close at short notice is hard to cover for.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

How we handle ductwork cleaning in Stanwell

We have been trading since 2009, working across London and the South East. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, our duct cleaning is done to BESA TR19® Grease, and our certificates are issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. The work covers horizontal duct runs, access panels and attenuators, and common reasons people get in touch are thick crusts of old grease along the duct and grease seeping out of the duct seams.

In a smaller place like Stanwell, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Grease, kitchens and Stanwell

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 13 pubs and bars and about 3 hotels and B&Bs across Stanwell and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Food hygiene inspections in Stanwell are the job of Spelthorne council’s environmental health team. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service covers Stanwell. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

Where a hall near Church of St Mary, or anywhere in Stanwell, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Stanwell is Ashford Hospital, about 0.9 miles south.

How the job changes from site to site

Attenuators and discharge

The last section of duct before the discharge is often the coolest, which can mean heavier deposits. It’s tested and cleaned along with the rest.

Bends and transitions

Transitions from the canopy spigot into the duct catch a lot of grease. We reach it from the plenum side where possible.

What happens on the day

Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. The visit itself takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct. In a smaller place like Stanwell, parking is rarely the issue, but tell us about gates, roof access and opening hours.

  1. We map the duct route and check where the access panels are.
  2. We measure grease thickness at set points before cleaning.
  3. We open the panels and scrape out the heaviest grease.
  4. Horizontal runs and risers are then degreased by the method that suits the deposit.
  5. Post-clean readings and photos go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

Advice

Keeping the system healthy

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:

  • Store the certificate with the fire risk assessment
  • Run the extract fan throughout service
  • Keep to the interval on the report
  • Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier

Access panels are closed and sealed back up after cleaning, and the surrounding area is left clean. Grease and dirty water are contained and removed.

Extra access panels mean more of the duct gets cleaned each time. Grease you can reach is grease that gets removed.

Signs you need ductwork cleaning in Stanwell

The further the air travels from the cooking, the cooler it gets. Cooling air drops its grease onto the inside of the duct, so duct runs keep collecting grease long after the canopy.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • A grease test showing the duct is overdue
  • Thick deposits at the bottom of a vertical duct
  • A duct nobody has opened in years
  • Proof of duct cleaning for the insurer

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Stanwell Fields CofE Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Before you book anyone

  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

Multi-site and managed buildings

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

What a clean won’t put right

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it won’t cover:

  • Fire dampers that do not close (they need testing and remedials)
  • Ductwork that was poorly designed
  • Leaking duct joints that need repair

If you’re not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Stanwell questions

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Stanwell?

Stanwell is in the area of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Will you come out to Stanwell?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Will the duct clean disrupt the kitchen?

Out of hours, at a time that suits the kitchen. Long ducts can be split across visits, with the kitchen ready to cook each morning.

What types of premises do you cover?

Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.

How is kitchen extract ductwork cleaned?

We open each access panel and clean the section it reaches. Grease is scraped out first, then degreased, with readings taken before and after.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so sites at different addresses can be planned together on one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.

What about areas you cannot get to?

We never leave them off the paperwork. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

What is TR19?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
