FAQs for Southend
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Southend?
Southend is in the area of London Fire Brigade. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Do you work at weekends in Southend?
Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The site is handed back ready to open. When you give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos, mention when the site is quiet.
What about areas you can’t get to?
The report shows them clearly. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line, and we’ll advise on what to do next.
How often does extract ductwork need cleaning?
It follows the same interval as the whole extract, ranging from 3-monthly to 12-monthly. Grease thickness testing shows whether that is often enough.
How much notice do you need?
It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you will get one fixed quote.
Can you fit access panels in our ductwork?
Yes, we install duct access panels. Panels go where they give the best access to sections that couldn’t be reached, and we’ll recommend where.
Ductwork cleaning in Southend
If the ducts in Southend haven’t been cleaned for a while, or nobody is sure when they were? A few details about the system are a good start when you ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and a fixed price will follow, normally within one working day. If you have heavy grease at the base of a riser and thick crusts of old grease along the duct, we can put it right, from bends and junctions, multi-storey ducts and access panels onwards.
London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, and the duct may run up through several floors before it discharges at the roof. In Southend, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Why act early in Southend
Dealing with the ductwork in Southend now beats dealing with it after a problem. The work takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points, and we work evenings, overnight and weekends. Every month a London system goes without attention adds to what has to be done later.
One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before work begins.

The process
At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct. In Southend, as across London, we normally work overnight or at weekends and hand the site back ready to open.
- The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
- Grease thickness is measured at set points.
- Out of hours, the area is protected and the access panels opened.
- Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
- Panels are closed, readings and photos repeated, and unreachable sections recorded.
Preparing for the visit
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
Get a fixed quote
Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before we start.
Advice
Multi-site and managed buildings
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
What ductwork cleaning looks like in Southend
There are about 231 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 135 sandwich bars and takeaways across Southend and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Wherever those kitchens cook under a canopy, the horizontal runs and risers need cleaning as well as the hood. London Fire Brigade covers Southend. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Overnight is the normal time to clean a London kitchen extract, so trading isn’t affected.
If you run a café or takeaway near Bellingham station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Elfrida Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

What affects the cost of ductwork cleaning
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:
- Any permits to work or inductions
- The number of sites or systems
- How easy every part is to reach
- The size of the system
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.
Helping us quote
A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- The site address and the type of premises
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.
Looking after it afterwards
Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Run the extract fan throughout service
- Never cook with a filter missing
- Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned
- Have the grease measured if cooking hours go up
When the duct is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. It shows when and where the clean was done and by whom.
Have access panels fitted where sections cannot be reached. Grease you can reach is grease that gets removed.
How the job changes from site to site
Horizontal duct runs
The underside of a horizontal duct collects the most grease. Thick deposits are scraped out by hand before degreasing, then the walls and roof are cleaned too.
Bends and transitions
A bend can hold far more grease than a straight run of the same length. We clean it back by hand and with degreaser, and test it before and after.
What we’re called out for in Southend
A vertical riser can run up several floors. Grease collects on the riser walls and gathers at the bottom as liquid grease runs down. Panels along the riser make proper cleaning possible.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Grease pooling at the foot of the riser
- Grease leaking from duct joints
- A grease test showing the duct is overdue
- Smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Dunstan or elsewhere in Southend, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- What insurance they carry
- Whether the price is fixed
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
