Ductwork cleaning in Smithfield, done properly
In doctor’s terms, the ductwork is the system’s arteries: find the blockages, clear them, then check the flow is right. Readings taken before and after show the difference, alongside before and after pictures. The work covers attenuators, bends and junctions and vertical risers, and the jobs we see most are gaps where access panels were never fitted and fat dripping from the ductwork.
Kitchens in Smithfield, like many across London, can share a building with flats or offices, with the duct running up through shared risers. A duct fire there can reach parts of the building far from the range, so a regular TR19® clean protects everyone in it.
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That is why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

What a clean won’t put right
We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

- Parts of the duct with no way in
- Ductwork that’s corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will say what we think before booking.
Parts of the system we cover

Looking after it afterwards
Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Flag drips from the duct straight away
- Book the next clean before the recommended date
- Keep the fan on while anything is cooking
- Make sure filters are seated properly
When the duct is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. It records the date, the location and the technician.
Some signs mean the duct needs attention sooner: drips from the ductwork, stale smells or a noisy fan. Testing will show whether any section has reached 500 microns.
What affects the quote in Smithfield
Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:
- What state the system is in
- Any permits to work or inductions
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
You won’t find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will explain what it covers.
Helping us quote
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Problems your staff have spotted
Need a price for ductwork cleaning? Please call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us about the site. We’ll talk you through the work and send you a fixed quote before you commit to anything.
Smithfield questions
Who is the fire and rescue service for Smithfield?
That is London Fire Brigade. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.
Can parking be tricky for a job in Smithfield?
We plan it in advance, so let us know about loading bays, permits and access rules at the building. Where restrictions apply in the day, an evening or overnight visit usually gets round them.
Can you price the work without visiting?
Yes, if we can see what we need. If not, a site survey comes first, and the quote follows that.
Can you clean ductwork with no access panels?
Sections out of reach are written down on the report, as TR19 expects. We can fit new access panels so they’re cleaned next time.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line and we will talk you through the next steps.
What accreditations do you have?
We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.
How often does extract ductwork need cleaning?
The duct is cleaned as part of the whole system, at intervals set by BESA guidance, ranging from 3-monthly to 12-monthly. Readings tell you if it needs to be more often.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes, of course. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.
Do you need ductwork cleaning in Smithfield?
Risers carry the extract up through the building. Grease clings to the walls and can run down to the base, where it can pool. Access along its height is needed to clean it properly.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- Readings above 200 microns from a grease thickness test
- Fat dripping from the ductwork
- Years of grease along the duct floor
- Grease pooling at the foot of the riser
A kitchen near Farringdon station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.
What to look for in a quote
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
- Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos
Kitchen extracts in Smithfield
The Food Standards Agency lists about 663 pubs and bars and about 211 hotels and B&Bs as registered food businesses in and around Smithfield, up to about a mile and a half out. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. In London, kitchens are normally cleaned overnight, when the kitchen is closed and loading is easier. Smithfield is covered by London Fire Brigade. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Charterhouse Square School or anywhere near Smithfield, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Finsbury Health Centre is the nearest hospital to Smithfield, about 0.5 miles north-west.
Smithfield is about 1 mile north of London, in Greater London. Across the EC1V area, we cover ductwork cleaning for commercial sites. Our Greater London coverage runs to 764 places, Smithfield among them.
Postcode districts we cover here for ductwork cleaning: EC1V, EC1P and EC1R. Whether your site is on Oat Lane, Shoe Lane and Long Lane or anywhere close by, we can help. You’ll find Smithfield on the A1 and A4, so it’s easy for us to get to for out-of-hours visits. We also cover the places around Smithfield: Farringdon (1 mile north), Blackfriars (1 mile south), Holborn (1 mile west), Temple Bar (1 mile south-west) and Clerkenwell (1 mile north). We also work in nearby towns such as Kensington (4 miles west), Walthamstow (6 miles north-east), Hampstead (4 miles north-west), Ruislip (14 miles west), Brompton (3 miles south-west) and Stockwell (4 miles south).
Near you in Smithfield
Around Smithfield, our work takes us to kitchens and buildings near London Nautical School, Barts Health Archives and St Alban's Church of England Primary School, among other places. Other local landmarks include St Mary-at-Hill (1 mile south-east), Oriole pub (less than half a mile south-west) and Postman's Park (under half a mile south-east). Smithfield has its own railway station: Farringdon station. A little further out are Montfichet's Tower (within half a mile south) and Postal Museum (under half a mile south-east). Green spaces nearby include Ludgate Hill and St. James's Park Lake.
What staff can safely do
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.
Leave it or put it right?
There’s no law that names TR19. The Fire Safety Order 2005 makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, including the grease inside the extract ductwork. Leaving it on a busy London site only adds to the work.
What you pay depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

How the visit works
We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool before we start, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. Night and weekend working is normal for us in London, and a site in Smithfield is no exception.
- First the duct route is traced and every access point noted.
- We measure grease thickness at set points before cleaning.
- We open the panels and scrape out the heaviest grease.
- Horizontal runs and risers are then degreased by the method that suits the deposit.
- Post-clean readings and photos go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.
How to prepare
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Let us know about parking and loading
Getting a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
