How we handle ductwork cleaning in Green Street
Once air leaves the canopy, it travels through ductwork that most people never see. Grease settles along every metre of it and a fire in the duct can spread through the building. We clean it from the inside, through access panels, to BESA TR19® Grease. If you are dealing with fat dripping from the ductwork and an insurer asking for TR19 evidence, we can help.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.
We’ve been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Keeping the system healthy
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Do not block access panels with shelving or stock
- Run the extract fan throughout service
- Keep to the interval on the report
- Never cook with a filter missing
The report names every part of the duct that couldn’t be reached and why. You can then decide whether to have access panels fitted.
Have access panels fitted where sections cannot be reached. Grease you can reach is grease that gets removed.
What affects the cost of ductwork cleaning
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- The condition of the system
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before work begins.
Helping us quote
When you call or email, these details help:
- A few general shots of the system
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
Want a quote for ductwork cleaning? Please call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and tell us about the site. We will talk you through the work and give you a fixed quote before you commit to anything.
What happens if it’s left?
Grease narrows the duct and slows the air. The fan works harder, the kitchen gets hotter and smoke lingers at the canopy and grease can drip from duct joints. A planned visit to Green Street is easier to arrange than an emergency callout.
We do not list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we’ll explain what it covers.

Common questions in Green Street
Which fire authority looks after Green Street?
Green Street is in the area of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
Can a school canteen extract in Green Street be done out of term time?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. With about 3 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Green Street, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the dates the site is empty.
Do you cover Green Street?
Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, Green Street included.
What is TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
How much notice do you need?
Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. We typically quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
What if part of the duct can’t be reached?
Any section we can’t reach is recorded on the report, as TR19 expects. We can fit new access panels so they’re cleaned next time.
What shows that the ducts need a clean?
A grease thickness test gives the answer. Using a Wet Film Thickness Test or Deposit Thickness Test, we check the grease at set points. BESA guidance says the mean shouldn’t exceed 200 microns, and 500 or more anywhere needs immediate spot cleaning.
Is a quote from photos possible?
Often, yes. With good pictures, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Where we cannot see enough, we arrange a survey.
How the visit works
Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the ductwork cleaning, tidy up and leave you the report. The visit itself takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Green Street.
- The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
- We take grease readings along the route.
- Once the kitchen has closed, we protect the area and open the panels.
- Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
- We close up, re-test, photograph and record anything out of reach.
Preparing for the visit
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

Advice
Part by part
Vertical risers
In taller buildings, a riser may pass through several floors and fire compartments, where fire dampers may be fitted. Damper testing is a separate service.
Bends and transitions
A bend can hold far more grease than a straight run of the same length. It’s scraped out and degreased, and test it before and after.
Honest limits
In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:
- Faulty fire dampers
- Sections that cannot be reached safely without new access (those are recorded, and panels can be fitted)
- Duct sections that need replacing
If you’re not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.
Parts of the system we cover

- Bends and junctions

- Attenuators
- Access panels
What we’re called out for in Green Street
The further the air travels from the cooking, the cooler it gets. Cooling air drops its grease onto the inside of the duct, so duct runs keep collecting grease long after the canopy.
What we’re most often called out for:
- Duct runs with no cleaning record
- Thick crusts of old grease along the duct
- Smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork
- Grease leaking from duct joints
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Crowhurst CofE Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
What your quote should include
- What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
- Whether the price is fixed
- Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
What ductwork cleaning looks like in Green Street
At about 3 miles from the coast, Green Street is close enough for sea air to matter. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. The Food Standards Agency lists about 4 bars, pubs and nightclubs as registered food businesses in and around Green Street, up to about a mile and a half out. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Fire safety in Green Street falls to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
Where a hall near The Parish Church of St George, or anywhere in Green Street, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. For kitchens close to Crowhurst station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.
