Common questions in Elmstead
Which fire authority looks after Elmstead?
Elmstead is in the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.
Will you come out to Elmstead?
Yes, Elmstead is part of our area, however small the site. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
What does TR19 mean?
A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.
What shows that the ducts need a clean?
Signs include grease dripping from joints, smells and a fan working harder, but the only sure way is to measure. Grease thickness testing shows exactly where the duct stands.
Do we have to stop cooking while the ducts are cleaned?
Out of hours, at a time that suits the kitchen. Larger systems may be cleaned over several nights, with the kitchen ready to cook each morning.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
The report shows them clearly. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, which we can install.
Can you quote from pictures?
Yes, if we can see what we need. If not, a site survey comes first, then a fixed quote.
What’s involved in cleaning extract ducts?
We open each access panel and clean the section it reaches. Heavy grease comes out by hand, and what’s left is degreased, with readings taken before and after.
Ductwork cleaning in Elmstead
Once air leaves the canopy, it travels through ductwork that most people never see. Grease settles along every metre of it, and that is where a kitchen fire can travel. Our ductwork cleaning reaches inside the runs and risers through access panels, to BESA TR19® Grease. The work covers vertical risers, access panels and bends and junctions, and people most often call us about hardened, baked-on grease in long horizontal runs and grease leaking from duct joints.
For a kitchen in or near Elmstead, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
We’ve been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.

Looking after it afterwards
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Do not switch the extract off early
- Never cook with a filter missing
- Keep your cleaning records together
- Tell us if grease leaks from the ductwork
File the paperwork in the maintenance log. It’s the evidence an insurer or inspector may ask for, and the photos make the duct’s condition easy to see.
Have access panels fitted where sections cannot be reached. It doesn’t stop grease forming, but it stops it building unseen.

Leave it or put it right?
Grease left in a duct in Elmstead hardens over time. Heat and age turn it into a thick, stubborn crust, so the later the clean, the bigger the job. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

How the job changes from site to site
Attenuators and discharge
Attenuators, where fitted, quieten the extract, and their linings can soak up grease. We clean what can be reached and note anything that cannot.
Vertical risers
Risers are cleaned through panels at different levels. Where it cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
Ductwork cleaning around Elmstead
Elmstead lies within about 3 miles of the sea. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Look up Elmstead on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you will find about 23 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 3 takeaways across Elmstead and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Wherever those kitchens cook under a canopy, the horizontal runs and risers need cleaning as well as the hood. Elmstead is covered by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Broomgrove Junior School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Essex County Hospital about 3.8 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
Elmstead is about 1 mile north-east of Wivenhoe, in Essex. Elmstead gets the same approach as every site we work on: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with pictures. 644 places in Essex are on our list, from busy centres to quieter spots. You can also see our page for Chelmsford, roughly 23 miles from Elmstead.

How we price ductwork cleaning
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We check:
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- How easy every part is to reach
- Any permits to work or inductions
- What state the system is in
Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.
What to send for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:
- The postcode and the type of business
- Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- Any previous report or certificate
For ductwork cleaning in Elmstead, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, and send photos or your last report if you can. We normally send a fixed quote within one working day.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
What a clean won’t put right
We will not sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so these are the things it won’t cover:
- A damper stuck open in the duct
- Ductwork that’s corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)
- A worn-out fan that needs replacing
If you are not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will give you a straight answer.

What we do, step by step
We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. The timing of a visit to Elmstead is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.
- The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
- We take grease readings along the route.
- Once the kitchen has closed, we protect the area and open the panels.
- Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
- We close up, re-test, photograph and record anything out of reach.
Getting ready for the visit
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
