Ductwork cleaning for sites in Rowhedge

Ductwork cleaning in Rowhedge, done properly

Between the canopy and the fan runs the ductwork, hidden above ceilings and inside walls. Grease settles along every metre of it, and that’s where a kitchen fire can travel. We clean it from the inside, through access panels, to BESA TR19® Grease. If you have years of grease along the duct floor and an insurer asking for TR19 evidence, we can put it right, from multi-storey ducts, attenuators and bends and junctions onwards.

In a smaller place like Rowhedge, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Rowhedge kitchens: local notes

Rowhedge is within about 2 miles of the coast. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. There are about 17 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 7 takeaways and sandwich shops across Rowhedge and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. The duct above a busy canopy coats itself in grease long before anyone sees it. Rowhedge is covered by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

For schools such as St Lawrence Church of England Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Lawrence or anywhere around Rowhedge, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. If you run a café or takeaway near Wivenhoe station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.

Common questions in Rowhedge

Which fire authority looks after Rowhedge?

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Rowhedge. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Rowhedge?

Kitchens in Rowhedge are inspected by Colchester council’s environmental health officers. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

How often should kitchen ducts be cleaned?

The minimum depends on how long the kitchen cooks each day: 3-monthly for heavy use, 6-monthly for moderate and 12-monthly for light use. Grease readings may show it needs doing sooner.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Can you quote from pictures?

In many cases, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Where we can’t see enough, we arrange a survey.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Are you fully insured?

Yes, we’re fully insured. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

What affects the cost of ductwork cleaning

The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:

  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • The times the site is available

Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

Helping us quote

To help us quote quickly, send us:

  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • The site address and the type of premises

Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and photos, and we normally reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

Why deal with it now?

A partly blocked duct slows the airflow. Less air moves, so heat and smoke stay in the kitchen while the fan strains, and grease may start to leak from joints. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Different parts, different methods

Bends and transitions

A bend can hold far more grease than a straight run of the same length. We clean it back by hand and with degreaser, and readings are taken there before and after.

Vertical risers

A riser takes the duct up through one or more floors. Grease runs down the walls and gathers at the base, so the base is one of our test points.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Essex. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Looking after it afterwards

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Have the grease measured if cooking hours go up
  • Book the next clean before the recommended date
  • Keep grease filters clean and fitted whenever you cook
  • Ask us about extra access panels where sections can’t be reached

Access panels are closed and sealed back up after cleaning, and the area around them is cleaned down. Grease and dirty water are contained and removed.

Have access panels fitted where sections cannot be reached. Grease you can reach is grease that gets removed.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. That’s our job.

How the visit works

Your staff do not need to do much on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. Tell us about any gates, ladders or locked plant areas at your site near Rowhedge when you book.

  1. We map the duct route and check where the access panels are.
  2. Set points along the runs are tested for grease.
  3. Access panels are opened and heavy deposits scraped out by hand.
  4. The duct is degreased with the method that suits the grease, from degreasers to hot water or steam.
  5. We test again, take pictures and note any part that couldn’t be reached.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Move anything stored near the system

Get a fixed quote

Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your pictures and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price, before we start.
