How kitchen extract cleaning works in CO7
A closed kitchen is not earning, so the timing of a clean matters. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, or during holidays where a site closes for them. Equipment is switched off and left to cool, the area is sheeted, and the kitchen is handed back ready to cook. Typical jobs include an overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer and rancid smells from grease in the duct, on horizontal duct runs, discharge points and extract fans.
Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.
- We survey the system, from your pictures or on site, canopy to discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
- On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
- We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
- We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.
How we quote
One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before we start.
Why businesses in CO7 choose us
- Survey first, then a fixed quote
- A BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease
- Full insurance on every job
- One number for every site across the South East and London
Getting a quote
Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

Wivenhoe has its own railway station: Wivenhoe station. A little further out are Essex County Hospital (3.5 miles north-west) and Colchester Castle (3.2 miles north-west). The countryside around Wivenhoe includes Cockaynes Wood.
Kitchen extract cleaning across CO7: local notes
In CO7, we work in places such as Wivenhoe, Brightlingsea and Wivenhoe Quay and well beyond. Every place on our CO7 list (36 in all) is covered, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
Much of our work across London and the South East happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so sites in CO7 can keep trading. Coastal kitchens in CO7 often have their busiest months in the summer, so cleaning is often best booked before or after the peak season.
Wivenhoe: If you cook for passing trade around Wivenhoe station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Millfields Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
What happens if it’s left?
Putting it off simply moves the grease further down the duct. Over time, soft grease bakes into a harder, thicker crust, and that takes more work to shift. Regular cleans keep each visit shorter.

What we are called out for in CO7
A lot of duct grease gets there because the filters let it through. Damaged, missing or overloaded filters let grease straight past, and from there it travels on to the fan.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Fat running down the canopy edge
- A TR19 certificate needed for the insurer
- A kitchen with no current TR19 certificate
- Grease smells coming from the extract
Part by part
Extract fan and discharge
At the end of the system is the discharge, which can collect grease and stain the surface around it. It’s cleaned as far as safe access allows, and any limits are recorded.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Even a kitchen that cooks only a few hours a day needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance. Holidays make it simple to schedule.
Looking after it afterwards
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:
- Book the next clean before the date on the report
- Keep the cleaning records where you can find them
- Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day
- Run the extract fan throughout cooking
You leave with a date for the next clean, based on your cooking hours and the grease we measured. A 3, 6 or 12-monthly maintenance plan keeps it on track, so the date is not missed.
Book the next clean before the last one runs out. If the kitchen starts cooking longer hours, the interval should be looked at again, and grease readings will show it.
When it’s something else
We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:
- Damaged duct sections that need replacing
- A fan motor that has burnt out
- An undersized canopy or fan
CO7 questions
What do you do with what you remove?
We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it does not spread.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, plus food production and leisure sites.
What is TR19?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.
Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?
As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, our work sits within an independently audited scheme. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.
Will I get a certificate after the clean?
Yes, a TR19 certificate, along with a photo report. The report lists what was cleaned, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next clean is due.
What do you do to protect the area?
We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.
How long does it take to clean a kitchen extract system?
A small kitchen with a short duct can be done in a few hours, while long runs and tall risers take longer and may need more than one visit. We will tell you how long when we quote.
