Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Wivelsfield
The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. If you’re dealing with a filter housing caked in grease and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector, we can help, from island canopies, plenum chambers and baffle filters onwards.
Somewhere as small as Wivelsfield, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Multi-site and managed buildings
From a single site to a large estate, you get the same standard: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.
We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we will send a fixed quote.
What we are called out for in Wivelsfield
A canopy in Wivelsfield picks up grease at much the same rate as one anywhere else with the same cooking: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. High-heat cooking coats it fastest.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Grease channels that no longer drain
- Poor capture at the hood
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Ote Hall Chapel or elsewhere in Wivelsfield, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Why deal with it now?
Drips from a dirty canopy land on the cooking line. It’s a food hygiene concern as much as a fire concern, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before work begins.

- Full insurance on every job

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Wivelsfield
Can you work in Wivelsfield outside opening hours?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. That way a site in Wivelsfield does not have to lose a day’s trading. Let us know the hours you are closed and we’ll book within them.
Which council inspects kitchens in Wivelsfield?
That is Lewes council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Wivelsfield. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
How much notice should we give?
Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. We typically quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
What causes grease to drip from the hood?
Normally because the troughs or gutters are full, or the plenum is overloaded. Grease has nowhere else to go, so it runs down and drips, and condensation can carry it too. Cleaning the canopy and plenum clears it.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and we will quote them together.
What accreditations do you have?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
How it works
Every visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, make the system safe, carry out the canopy cleaning, tidy up and leave you the report. The visit itself takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Wivelsfield before we set off.
- First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
- Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
- With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
- The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
- Clean filters are refitted and before and after pictures go into your report.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
Ask for a quote
To get a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. We typically come back within one working day.
Advice
Honest limits
In fairness, some problems need a different fix:
- A dirty extract fan further along the system
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
- Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
If you are not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Kitchen extracts in Wivelsfield
The FSA’s data shows about 3 bars, pubs and nightclubs registered within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Wivelsfield. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. It’s Lewes council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Wivelsfield. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Wivelsfield is covered by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
Historic houses near Wivelsfield, such as Ockenden Manor about 3.6 miles north-west, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like St Francis Hospital about 1.6 miles north, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Keeping the system healthy
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:
- Keep every filter in place while cooking
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
- Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
- Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
File the report alongside your fire risk assessment, so it’s ready when an EHO, insurer or fire officer asks. Before and after pictures speak for themselves.
Tell us if the canopy starts dripping or the filters clog sooner than usual. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.
What your team can do, and what needs us
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
