Canopy cleaning across Welborne

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Welborne

Canopy cleans are done out of hours: after service, overnight or at the weekend. Cooking equipment is turned off and cooled, then covered so the kitchen is ready when we go. If you have a greasy hood noticed by an inspector and a hood coated in old grease, we can put it right, from canopy light fittings, wall canopies and island canopies onwards.

Somewhere as small as Welborne, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Honest limits

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what canopy cleaning will not do:

  • Bent or broken filters
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • Electrical faults in the canopy

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Wall canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters

What happens on the day

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. All told, the work takes a few hours for most canopies. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Welborne, let us know and we’ll plan around it.

  1. The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

How to prepare

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions

Welborne questions

Which fire authority looks after Welborne?

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Welborne. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Is canopy cleaning any different in a coastal place like Welborne?

Yes, to a degree: at about 3 miles from the coast, Welborne gets salt-laden air that corrodes metal faster. We look at fans, cowls and fixings for rust as well as grease.

How much of the canopy do you clean?

Everything from the outer face to the plenum behind the filters. Troughs, gutters and filter housings are cleaned too.

What do you do to protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.

What does TR19 mean?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

Leave it or put it right?

A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. Cleaning it removes that fuel. A planned visit to Welborne is easier to arrange than an emergency callout.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

What your team can do, and what needs us

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Welborne?

A canopy with gaps around its filters lets grease straight through. The plenum and housing behind them then take far more grease than they should, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.

Clients typically contact us when they notice something like this:

  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Filters that never seem to stay clean
  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Francis, or anywhere in Welborne, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the figure could change on the day
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • What records you will receive afterwards
  • If they look at the system before pricing

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

How the job changes from site to site

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. Grease that slips past the filters settles there, so it’s scraped and degreased on every canopy clean.

Grease troughs and gutters

Some troughs drain to a cup or drawer, we empty and clean that as well, and we will show staff where it is.

Between visits

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. Our tips:

  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle

Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If the job covers only the canopy, the paperwork reflects that.

A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Kitchens in Welborne get their food hygiene inspections from Fareham council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
