Need canopy cleaning in Telscombe?

For landlords and multi-site operators

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.

Canopy cleaning in Telscombe, done properly

We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are often asked to deal with wet, greasy drips from the hood and an EHO comment about the canopy, across canopy light fittings, wall canopies and plenum chambers.

Kitchens around a place like Telscombe are often in older buildings or single-storey extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

How we price canopy cleaning

Your quote is based on your site. We consider:

  • Parking and loading at the site
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • The scale of the work
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you will get one fixed quote.

What we need to know

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

Need a price for canopy cleaning? Please ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us about the site. We’ll explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before anything is booked.

What happens if it’s left?

If the canopy waits for the next full clean, grease keeps adding up. Some kitchens need the canopy cleaning more often than the whole system, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. Light use slows the build-up but does not stop it.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

Between visits

Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Keep grease cups and drawers emptied
  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing

Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If the job covers only the canopy, the paperwork reflects that.

Tell us if the canopy starts dripping or the filters clog sooner than usual. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

When something else is needed

Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we’ll tell you before work begins. It will not put right:

  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
  • A light fitting that does not work
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think.

What we work on in Telscombe

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Wall canopies

Different parts, different methods

Wall canopies

At the back of the canopy, behind the filters, grease builds up unseen. We remove the filters to reach it and degrease it properly.

Island canopies

Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.

Common questions in Telscombe

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Telscombe?

That’s East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Who inspects food businesses in Telscombe?

Kitchens in Telscombe are inspected by Lewes council’s environmental health officers. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

What information do you need?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.

Which canopies and hoods do you clean?

Wall and island canopies, long cooking-line hoods and small single hoods. Each one is cleaned inside and out, with the plenum behind the filters.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

What’s TR19?

BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.

Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?

On its own, a canopy clean is a useful extra rather than a full TR19 clean. We’ll make clear on the report which parts were cleaned, so your records stay accurate.

Telscombe kitchens: local notes

The coast is only about 1 mile from Telscombe. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 17 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 13 takeaways in and around Telscombe, up to about a mile and a half out. Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. The fire and rescue service for Telscombe is East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Telscombe Cliffs Community Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Chailey Heritage Marine Hospital is the nearest hospital to Telscombe, about 3.8 miles south-east. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Monk's House is about 2.7 miles north-east), access may need planning.

How it works

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Everything the job in Telscombe needs is worked out beforehand, from the survey.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Preparing for the visit

  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
