Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

About our canopy cleaning in Stonymarsh

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have a sticky, discoloured canopy and poor capture at the hood, we can help.

For a kitchen in or near Stonymarsh, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

A written report with pictures follows every visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Leave it or put it right?

When grease clogs the filters and plenum, the canopy can’t draw air as it should. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line while the fan strains. Cleaning restores the path the air should take. It’s simpler to plan the work at Stonymarsh now than to arrange it in a hurry later.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

How the job changes from site to site

Wall canopies

A long wall canopy may hold several sections of filters. Each section’s plenum and housing is cleaned in turn, with pictures for each.

Plenums and filter housings

Filter housings hold the filters in place, and their channels fill with grease. Clean housings let the filters seat properly and leave no gaps.

How it works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Stonymarsh, let us know and we’ll plan around it.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from pictures or on a visit.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Stonymarsh kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 4 bars, pubs and nightclubs in and around Stonymarsh, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Food hygiene inspections in Stonymarsh are the job of Test Valley council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Stonymarsh. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Andrew or anywhere around Stonymarsh, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Historic houses near Stonymarsh, such as Mottisfont Abbey about 0.5 miles west, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Romsey Community Hospital about 3.7 miles south-east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Stonymarsh is about 4 miles north-west of Romsey, in Hampshire. Sites in Stonymarsh get the same service as everywhere we cover: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where necessary and a written report with photos. Stonymarsh questions

Which council inspects kitchens in Stonymarsh?

Kitchens in Stonymarsh are inspected by Test Valley council’s environmental health officers. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Can you work in Stonymarsh outside opening hours?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The work in Stonymarsh can fit around your hours. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Which sectors do you work in?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, plus food production and leisure sites.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not usually. We need the work area to ourselves while we are on site, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so sites at different addresses can be planned together on one programme. Every site has its own report.

Which accreditations do you hold?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

Are you insured?

Yes. We’re fully insured, and the details are available on request.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.

Keeping the system healthy

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Check filters are not leaving gaps
  • Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
  • Clean the baffle filters often

Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If the job covers only the canopy, the paperwork reflects that.

A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

What affects the quote in Stonymarsh

We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:

  • The times the site is available
  • How easy every part is to reach
  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • Travel, parking and unloading

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

Helping us quote

What to send for a quote:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Here’s what helps us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few pictures and any previous report or certificate. Then ring 0345 646 2711 or email us.
