TR19 inspection for sites in St Helens

About our TR19 inspection in St Helens

BESA’s minimum cleaning frequencies depend on how long the kitchen cooks each day: every 3 months for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day, every 6 months for moderate use of 6 to 12 hours, and every 12 months for light use of 2 to 6 hours. Those are minimums, and grease readings help set the real interval. If you are dealing with insurers asking for TR19 evidence and surveys needed before quoting a full clean, we can help.

Work in a small place like St Helens starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. We are also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

What the work involves, part by part

Vertical risers

Risers carry the extract up through the building. Grease can drain down and pool at the bottom, so the base is a key test point.

Extract fan and discharge

Grease on the fan adds to wear. The inspection shows whether it needs cleaning now.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

When to call us in St Helens

Records can go missing when a business changes hands or contractors. Without them, nobody knows how much grease is in the system or when it was last cleaned.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Systems that need surveying before cleaning
  • Kitchens taken over with no cleaning records
  • Kitchens whose menu or hours have changed
  • An insurer’s request for a TR19 audit

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Catherine-by-the-Green or elsewhere in St Helens, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

What your quote should include

  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos

Grease, kitchens and St Helens

St Helens lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Salt air speeds up corrosion of roof-level fans, discharge cowls and their fixings. There are about 19 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of St Helens, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. For any of them with a canopy, measuring grease is better than guessing when to clean. Food hygiene inspections in St Helens are the job of Isle of Wight council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

School kitchens, at schools like St Helens Primary School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. A hospital like Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children, about 5.3 miles south-west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

St Helens is about 3 miles south-east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. We carry out TR19 inspection for businesses, landlords and public buildings in St Helens and the rest of the Isle of Wight. We cover 125 places across the Isle of Wight, from busy centres to quieter spots. There’s also a page for Portsmouth, about 8 miles away.

Postcode districts we cover here for TR19 inspection: PO33. We cover sites on Station Road, Upper Green Road and Old Chapel Lane and nearby roads. Nearby, we also carry out TR19 inspection in Gaskins (1 mile south-west), Brading (2 miles south-west), Yarbridge (2 miles south-west), Morton (2 miles south-west) and Yaverland (3 miles south-west). Larger places within reach include Newport (8 miles west), Ryde (3 miles north-west), Cowes (9 miles north-west), Sandown (4 miles south-west), Shanklin (5 miles south-west) and Ventnor (8 miles south-west). If your site is somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so let us know when you get in touch.

Why deal with it now?

Post-clean verification shows whether the system was left the way the certificate says, before the next clean is due. Rural sites can’t always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Why us?

  • Accredited under CHAS and SafeContractor, with ISO 9001
  • Fixed quotes, typically within one working day
  • Out-of-hours work and a 24/7 emergency line
  • A written report with photos after every visit

Take a look at our cost guide or our accreditations and certificates.

When it’s something else

We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so these are the things it won’t cover:

  • The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
  • A faulty or failing extract fan
  • Hidden runs that need access panels first

If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wet film thickness tests
  • Post-clean checks
  • Pre-clean surveys
  • Access surveys
  • Insurer audits
  • Deposit thickness tests

What we do, step by step

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before we start, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near St Helens, let us know and we’ll plan around it.

  1. Post-clean verification is booked once the clean is done.
  2. The same access points are opened up.
  3. Grease readings are taken again at set points.
  4. We photograph each area to record how it was left.
  5. We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.

Before we arrive

  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

Questions from St Helens

Can sea air affect TR19 inspection in St Helens?

It can. Salt air reaches St Helens, which is within about 2 miles of the coast, and it speeds up rust. Corroded fixings and housings are noted on the report so they can be dealt with.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in St Helens?

Fire safety enforcement in St Helens is handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, with the emergency line covering every other hour.

Why survey before a clean?

We look at the system from canopy to discharge, take grease readings and check access. From it, we plan the clean and quote a fixed price.

Are you accredited?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’ve been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.

What is grease thickness testing?

Readings are taken using the Wet Film Thickness Test or the Deposit Thickness Test, then compare them with the TR19® Grease figures.

What do you do to protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

How much does TR19 inspection cost?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before work begins.

Fixed quotes for TR19 inspection in St Helens

Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The times the site is available
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids

What you pay depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Helping us quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. Then we send a fixed price, before we start.
