South Ham kitchens: local notes

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 29 pubs, bars and clubs across South Ham and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Environmental health officers from Basingstoke and Deane council inspect food businesses in South Ham. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Fire safety in South Ham falls to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

Term dates shape school work: for a school like St Anne's Catholic Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. The Vyne, about 3.5 miles north, is one of the historic houses near South Ham; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.

South Ham is about 1 mile south-west of Basingstoke, in Hampshire. Whatever kind of site you run in South Ham, canopy cleaning is something we can help with. Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in South Ham

Canopy cleaning is part of every full TR19® Grease clean, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. Where that’s the case, we will be clear that the ducts and fan aren’t included, so your records stay accurate. The work covers plenum chambers, island canopies and canopy light fittings, and the jobs we see most are a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and smoke hanging around the canopy during service.

In a smaller place like South Ham, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

When it’s something else

We won’t sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies

What the work involves, part by part

Island canopies

Everything about an island canopy is on show, so the finish matters. It’s degreased and photographed for your report.

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. It catches whatever gets past the filters, so it’s scraped and degreased on every canopy clean.

Aftercare tips

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:

  • Check all filters are fitted before service
  • Keep the fan on through service
  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy

File the report alongside your fire risk assessment, so it’s ready when an EHO, insurer or fire officer asks. Before and after pictures speak for themselves.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It doesn’t reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in South Ham

Is South Ham within the area you cover?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, South Ham included. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in South Ham?

Kitchens in South Ham are inspected by Basingstoke and Deane council’s environmental health officers. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.

How long is a canopy clean?

Allow an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Your quote will give a time.

How much notice do you need?

Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes usually come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.

Are you accredited?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not typically. We need the work area to ourselves while we’re on site, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.

What happens to the waste?

It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.

How we price canopy cleaning

The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:

  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The number of sites or systems

What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before work begins, so you know where you stand.

Asking for a quote

When you contact us, it’s useful to have:

  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings

To get a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. We usually come back within one working day.

How the visit works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a few hours for most canopies. In a place like South Ham, we fit the visit around your hours.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. We protect everything below once it has cooled.
  3. Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. The canopy is signed off with before and after pictures and a next clean date.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site

Getting a quote

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, and then give you a fixed quote. To start, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

Do you need canopy cleaning in South Ham?

Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, and grease ends up dripping from the canopy edge.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Poor capture at the hood
  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Filters that never seem to stay clean

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Saint Peter's Church, or anywhere in South Ham, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Before booking anyone

  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • What hours they’ll be on site

Why it’s worth doing now in South Ham

Getting the canopy cleaned in South Ham now saves a bigger job later. The work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up, out of hours so service carries on. Left alone, grease keeps moving into the plenum and duct. Light use slows the build-up but doesn’t stop it.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.
