Canopy Cleaning in Sompting
Canopy and hood cleaning for businesses, landlords and public buildings in Sompting. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and fully insured.
- A hood coated in old grease
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Grease dripping from the canopy edge
For landlords and multi-site operators
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across West Sussex. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Sompting
Dripping edges and a sticky hood are the first things a visitor notices. Under the surface, the plenum behind the filters is usually in a worse state. We clean both, so the canopy is clean where it shows and where it does not. We’re often asked to deal with a sticky, discoloured canopy and grease channels that no longer drain, across canopy light fittings, plenum chambers and island canopies.
In a smaller place like Sompting, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.
We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

How we price canopy cleaning
We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:
- Any permits to work or inductions
- The size of the system
- The number of sites or systems
- What state the system is in
Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before work begins.
What to send for a quote
To speed up the quote, send us:
- The postcode and the type of business
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

What we’re called out for in Sompting
Most canopies have troughs or channels that catch running grease. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.
Look out for these warning signs:
- Poor capture at the hood
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- Grease dripping from the canopy edge
- Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Worthing Hospital (about 1.6 miles south-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.
What to look for in a quote
- How VAT is shown on the quote
- Whether they’re fully insured
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
What canopy cleaning can’t fix
It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:
- A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)
Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly.

Why deal with it now?
A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line while the fan strains. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. A quieter site near Sompting still needs its system looked after.
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

The process
The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Because the survey comes first, a visit to Sompting can typically be finished without a second trip.
- We look at the canopy first, from pictures or on a visit.
- Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
- We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
- The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
- Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.
Before we arrive
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
Getting a quote
Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you will usually have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Advice
What staff can safely do
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.
When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
FAQs for Sompting
Does the sea air around Sompting make a difference to canopy cleaning?
It can, as Sompting is within about 2 miles of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on metal. Corroded fixings and housings are noted on the report so they can be dealt with.
Is Sompting within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Are you insured?
Yes, fully. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.
How long will it take to clean the canopy?
That depends on the size of the canopy and how much grease is on it. Typically it takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits.
Does a canopy clean meet TR19?
A TR19® Grease clean covers the whole system, not just the canopy. Cleaning the canopy alone leaves the ducts, risers and fan untouched, and the report will say what was covered.
What kinds of canopies do you clean?
Wall and island canopies, long cooking-line hoods and small single hoods. The method is the same: filters out, plenum and housing cleaned, canopy degreased inside and out.
What happens if you cannot reach some of it?
They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so we can schedule a run of sites as one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.
What canopy cleaning looks like in Sompting
The coast is only about 2 miles from Sompting. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. Food Standards Agency records list about 31 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 34 takeaways and sandwich shops across Sompting and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. Kitchens in Sompting get their food hygiene inspections from Adur council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.
School kitchens, at schools like Sompting Village Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Where a hall near St Peter the Apostle, or anywhere in Sompting, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.
