Sidlow canopy cleaning
For deep cleaning of kitchen canopies, hoods, plenums and grease filters, inside and out in Sidlow, one call is all it takes, from survey to sign-off. Fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001.
- Grease dripping from the canopy edge
- Canopy gutters full of old fat
- Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
When to call us in Sidlow
Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
- Fat running down the front of the hood
- A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
- Grease filters blocking between washes
For schools such as Dovers Green School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.
Questions to ask before booking
- When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
- How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- How they set the interval to the next visit
How we handle canopy cleaning in Sidlow
Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. In that case, the report makes clear what was and wasn’t cleaned, so your records stay accurate. We are often asked to deal with a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and canopy gutters full of old fat, on wall canopies, canopy light fittings and grease gutters.
For a kitchen in or near Sidlow, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
A written report with photos follows each visit, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What a clean won’t put right
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what canopy cleaning will not do:
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
- Electrical faults in the canopy
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Common questions in Sidlow
Do you work in villages like Sidlow?
Yes, Sidlow is part of our area, however small the site. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Sidlow in the summer holidays?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. With about 3 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Sidlow, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. You can call 0345 646 2711 or email us with the dates the site is empty.
Which sectors do you work in?
Commercial premises of every kind: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. Work is timed around how each site runs.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Just the basics: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. Then give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.
Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?
The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: normally the employer or whoever controls the premises. In shared or managed buildings, a landlord, facilities manager or managing agent can share the duty.
Are the filters cleaned too?
They’re taken out, cleaned and refitted. Each filter is checked for fit as it goes back, because gaps let grease through.
Does a canopy clean meet TR19?
A canopy-only clean is possible, but it is not a full TR19 clean. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.
What causes grease to drip from the hood?
Full gutters and a heavily coated plenum are the common causes. With nowhere to collect, the grease overflows, and condensation can carry it too. Cleaning the canopy and plenum clears it.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. That’s our job.
The process
When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the photos you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Sidlow.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
- Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.
How to prepare
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site

Aftercare tips
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Don’t scrape the canopy with metal tools
- Wipe the canopy down at close every day
- Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.
Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.
What canopy cleaning looks like in Sidlow
The Food Standards Agency lists about 4 bars, pubs and nightclubs as registered food businesses within about 1.5 miles of central Sidlow. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Fire safety in Sidlow falls to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. In Sidlow, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Reigate and Banstead council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Emmanuel Church, or anywhere in Sidlow, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; East Surrey Hospital is the nearest hospital to Sidlow, about 1.8 miles north-east.

Why deal with it now?
In Sidlow, as elsewhere, a greasy canopy is one of the first things an inspector sees. Keeping it clean shows the rest of the kitchen is being looked after, and it’s far easier to keep clean than to rescue. Planning a trip to Sidlow ahead is easier for everyone than a rushed one.
What you pay depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

Part by part
Plenums and filter housings
Behind the grease filters is the plenum. It catches whatever gets past the filters, so it’s scraped and degreased on every canopy clean.
Island canopies
The underside of an island canopy is in full view, so the finish matters. It’s degreased and photographed for your report.
