Canopy cleaning for sites in Shootash

Do you need canopy cleaning in Shootash?

Steam and condensation make canopy grease harder to deal with. Water vapour condenses on the cooler canopy surfaces and drips, carrying grease with it. The result is sticky streaks and drips onto the range.

Look out for these warning signs:

  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • A filter housing caked in grease
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Grease channels that no longer drain

Mottisfont Abbey, about 3 miles north, is one of the historic houses near Shootash; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.

In a small place like Shootash, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Between visits

Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:

  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Check filters are not leaving gaps

We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Filters are back in place and seated properly ready for the next service.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It doesn’t reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

Part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

Lighter cooking still leaves grease on the canopy. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. That’s a lot of grease on the canopy, and canopy cleans between full cleans can help.

Shootash: your questions answered

Which fire service covers Shootash?

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Shootash. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Can you get to a site in Shootash?

Yes, Shootash is part of our area, however small the site. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

What’s TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

Who is the responsible person?

That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we will propose a schedule with a fixed quote.

Do you provide pictures of the cleaned canopy?

Before and after photos go into a report that lists what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach. A full TR19 clean adds a certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not typically. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so you keep your normal hours.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® itself isn’t law; it’s a BESA specification. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

How it works

We’re used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. The visit itself takes a few hours for most canopies. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Shootash can be planned properly.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Advice

Grease, kitchens and Shootash

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 3 restaurants, cafés and works canteens within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Shootash. Every kitchen among them that cooks under a canopy has a hood, plenum and filters collecting grease. Shootash sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. It’s Test Valley council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Shootash. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of All Saints or elsewhere in Shootash, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Shootash is Romsey Community Hospital, about 2.9 miles east.

Shootash is about 3 miles west of Romsey, in Hampshire. Shootash gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with photos. Our Hampshire coverage runs to 683 places, and Shootash is one of them. We also work in Southampton, around 9 miles away.

Every address in SO51 is covered for canopy cleaning, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Close by, we work in The Frenches (1 mile west), Plaitford Green (2 miles west), East Wellow (2 miles south), West Wellow (2 miles south-west) and Blackhill (3 miles south-west). Further out, we also cover Winchester (11 miles north-east), Eastleigh (9 miles east), Andover (15 miles north), Totton (6 miles south), Chandler's Ford (7 miles east) and Hedge End (12 miles south-east).

Around Shootash

Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to Stanbridge Earls School and the streets around them. For rail, the closest station is Romsey station, about 2.4 miles east of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include King Johns House (2.2 miles east) and Romsey Community Hospital (2.9 miles east). Not far away are Copythorne Common.

Fixed quotes for canopy cleaning in Shootash

The survey tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:

  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • The condition of the system
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

What to send for a quote

We can often survey from photos. The most useful are:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Problems your staff have spotted

For canopy cleaning in Shootash, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, plus pictures or the previous report if they’re to hand. A fixed quote usually follows within one working day.

When something else is needed

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • A hood that does not cover the cooking line
  • A fan that cannot pull enough air because it’s worn out
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think.
