Canopy cleaning across Send

Canopy cleaning in Send

We clean canopies in Send when the kitchen isn’t cooking: evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Cooking equipment is turned off and cooled, then covered so the kitchen is ready when we go. The work covers plenum chambers, island canopies and grease gutters, and the jobs we see most are filters that never seem to stay clean and condensation running down the canopy.

In a smaller place like Send, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.

A written report with pictures follows every visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Grease, kitchens and Send

The Food Standards Agency lists about 7 bars, pubs and nightclubs as registered food businesses across Send and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Environmental health officers from Guildford council inspect food businesses in Send. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Send is covered by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St William of York or elsewhere in Send, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Woking Community Hospital (about 2.1 miles north-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Send is about 3 miles south-east of Woking, in Surrey. Sites in Send get the same service as everywhere we cover: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with photos. Across Surrey, we cover 395 places, Send among them.

We work across the GU23 postcode area for canopy cleaning and the roads nearby. Whether your site is on Sandy Lane, Farm Lane and Sandfields or a nearby road, our technicians can take on the work. We also work in nearby towns such as Guildford (3 miles south-west), Woking (3 miles north-west), Camberley (9 miles west), Epsom (12 miles east), Farnham (13 miles south-west) and Ewell (13 miles east).

Between visits

Once we have finished, these simple steps help:

  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Keep the fan on through service

The report gives a recommended next clean date. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

Don’t let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

The survey tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:

  • The condition of the system
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • The times the site is available

A single site or a whole portfolio, we price it on the same basis: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before work begins.

What we need to know

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Your last certificate, test record or report

For a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. We typically come back within one working day.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.

Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with pictures.

Questions from Send

Can you come to Send after we close?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. It means the site in Send keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Can a school canteen extract in Send be done out of term time?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. The FSA’s register shows about 2 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Send. You can call 0345 646 2711, or email photos with the dates the site is empty.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, 24/7. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Is the inside of the hood cleaned?

We clean the canopy inside and out, along with its seams and grease channels. The plenum and filter housing behind the filters are cleaned too.

Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?

Filters are removed so we can clean the plenum and housing, then cleaned and refitted. Between cleans, a filter exchange service can keep them in good order.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and we’ll quote them together.

Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?

The law calls them the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you are not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.

What do you do to protect the area?

We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.

Different parts, different methods

Grease troughs and gutters

Many canopies have troughs or gutters around the edge to catch running grease. We empty and degrease them, so they can do their job again.

School and staff canteen kitchens

In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. We clean it and the plenum behind the filters, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Send?

Any canopy in Send that’s used for cooking will gather grease in the end. It’s fuel, sitting directly over the burners, which is why a flare-up near a dirty canopy is so dangerous.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Grease filters blocking between washes

Historic houses near Send, such as Clandon Park about 2.9 miles south, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

What happens if it’s left?

Drips from a dirty canopy land on the cooking line. It’s a food hygiene concern as much as a fire concern, and EHOs look at the cleanliness of the premises and equipment. A visit arranged in advance is far less disruptive than a callout on a busy day.

Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.

The process

Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. We plan the journey to Send and bring what the job is likely to need.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Preparing for the visit

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
