Canopy cleaning for sites in Norwood New Town

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Norwood New Town

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include fat running down the front of the hood and poor capture at the hood, across canopy light fittings, baffle filters and wall canopies.

London kitchens tend to trade late and open early, so work in Norwood New Town is normally booked for the night or the early hours. Parking, loading and access to the roof are agreed with the building before the night of the clean.

The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Aftercare tips

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy

A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

What happens on the day

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before work begins, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a few hours for most canopies. In Norwood New Town, as across London, we normally work overnight or at weekends and hand the site back ready to open.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Clear the space around the work

Advice

How the job changes from site to site

Wall canopies

A long wall canopy may hold several sections of filters. Each section’s plenum and housing is cleaned in turn, with pictures for each.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. Long hours mean the canopy collects grease fast, and canopy cleans between full cleans can help.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Sites vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule

What you pay depends on how big the system is, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

Asking for a quote

We can often survey from pictures. Try to include:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it

We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, and then give you a fixed quote. To start, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

Honest limits

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what canopy cleaning won’t do:

  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • A light fitting that doesn’t work

If you are not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

What the work covers

  • Wall canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Grease gutters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Island canopies

Why act early in Norwood New Town

A canopy clean in Norwood New Town now stops the grease spreading further. The work takes a few hours for most canopies, done while the kitchen is closed. Put off, the grease simply moves further into the system. A busy site in Norwood New Town builds up dirt and wear quickly, so putting it off makes the eventual job larger.

We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and we’ll explain what it covers.

Grease, kitchens and Norwood New Town

The FSA’s data shows about 34 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 6 hotels and guest houses registered across Norwood New Town and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. The fire and rescue service for Norwood New Town is London Fire Brigade. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Night work suits London kitchens, and roads and loading bays tend to be quieter too.

A kitchen near Gipsy Hill station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near New Covenant Church-Equipping People or elsewhere in Norwood New Town, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

What we are called out for in Norwood New Town

Grease doesn’t build up any differently in Norwood New Town: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. Frying and grilling load a canopy far faster than steaming or boiling.

The symptoms we’re asked about most include:

  • A hood coated in old grease
  • Filters that never seem to stay clean
  • A canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection
  • Condensation running down the canopy

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Rockmount Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Before you book anyone

  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • What hours they’ll be on site

Our hiring checklist

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Norwood New Town

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Norwood New Town?

Fire safety enforcement in Norwood New Town is handled by London Fire Brigade. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Can a school canteen extract in Norwood New Town be done out of term time?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. Around Norwood New Town, the Food Standards Agency lists about 35 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.

Why does grease run off the canopy edge?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?

That depends on who controls the premises. The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so we can schedule a run of sites as one programme. Each site gets its own report and pictures.

What kinds of canopies do you clean?

We clean canopies in commercial kitchens of every kind. The routine stays the same whatever the kitchen, with the equipment off and cool.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
