Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Newbury's

The canopy is the part of the extract everyone in the kitchen sees. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. Our canopy clean covers the shell inside and out, plus the plenum and the filter housing. Common call-outs are for a hood coated in old grease and condensation and grease dripping together, on baffle filters, grease gutters and island canopies.

In a small place like Newbury's, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

What happens on the day

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits, and we clear up before we go. Seeing the system in pictures first means the trip to Newbury's can be planned properly.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
  4. Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
  5. The canopy is signed off with before and after pictures and a next clean date.

Advice

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Newbury's

Will you come out to Newbury's?

Yes, Newbury's is part of our area, however small the site. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Which fire service covers Newbury's?

It’s East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Newbury's. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Is the inside of the hood cleaned?

All of it: the outer surfaces, the inner skin, the seams and the troughs. The plenum behind the filters is included, since that is where grease hides.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not normally. The area we are working in has to be out of use while we are there, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?

The filters come out so the plenum behind them can be cleaned, and they’re cleaned before going back in. We will tell you if any need replacing.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and many insurers can refuse or reduce a claim without proof of cleaning.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

That depends on the size of the canopy and how much grease is on it. As a guide, it takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

Kitchen extracts in Newbury's

The FSA’s data shows about 4 pubs and bars registered within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Newbury's. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Kitchens in Newbury's get their food hygiene inspections from Wealden council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. The fire and rescue service for Newbury's is East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

Term dates shape school work: for a school like Uplands Community College, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. Wadhurst Castle, about 1.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses near Newbury's; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Rehoboth Chapel, or anywhere in Newbury's, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Newbury's is about 5 miles south-east of Royal Tunbridge Wells, in East Sussex. Looking after it afterwards

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle

Anything worth knowing goes into the report: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. We keep it to what matters.

Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.

Leave it or put it right?

When grease clogs the filters and plenum, the canopy cannot draw air as it should. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line, and the fan works harder for less. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Newbury's rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

How we price canopy cleaning

You’ll get a fixed price before any work starts. It takes into account:

  • The condition of the system
  • The number of sites or systems
  • The scale of the work
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

What to send for a quote

To speed up the quote, send us:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • A few general shots of the system
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • The site address and the type of premises

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Honest limits

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think before booking.
