Canopy cleaning in New Barnet, done properly
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers wall canopies, plenum chambers and baffle filters, and the jobs we see most are a greasy hood noticed by an inspector and filters that clog soon after cleaning.
London kitchens tend to trade late and open early, so extract cleaning in New Barnet is usually done overnight, after the last service. Before the clean, we agree loading, parking and roof access with whoever manages the building.
For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. That’s why every job is written up in a report with photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Between visits
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Check filters are not leaving gaps
- Keep every filter in place while cooking
A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If the job covers only the canopy, the paperwork reflects that.
Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.
New Barnet questions
Is parking a problem for work in New Barnet?
Parking and loading in London need planning, so tell us about bays, permits and building rules when you book. Where restrictions apply in the day, an evening or overnight visit usually gets round them.
Which fire and rescue service is responsible for New Barnet?
Fire safety enforcement in New Barnet is handled by London Fire Brigade. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Is TR19 cleaning required by law?
No. TR19® itself isn’t law; it’s a BESA specification. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.
Which canopies and hoods do you clean?
Single hoods, long wall canopies and island canopies alike. We work out the approach when we survey, from photos or a visit.
Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?
Filters are removed so we can clean the plenum and housing, then cleaned and refitted. We also offer a filter exchange service for between cleans.
Do you cover New Barnet?
Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and that includes New Barnet.
What happens if you cannot reach some of it?
We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.
Who is the responsible person?
In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.
Why act early in New Barnet
If the canopy waits for the next full clean, grease keeps adding up. In a busy kitchen, the canopy and plenum can need attention between TR19 cleans, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. London sites work long hours, and the longer a job is left, the bigger it gets.
Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

Different parts, different methods
Wall canopies
At the back of the canopy, behind the filters, grease builds up unseen. With the filters out we can get to it and scrape it clean.
Island canopies
With filters on more than one side, an island canopy has more plenum to clean. Both sides are taken apart and cleaned.
When it’s something else
We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what canopy cleaning will not do:
- Electrical faults in the canopy
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
- Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think.
What the work covers
- Baffle filters
- Wall canopies
- Island canopies
- Canopy light fittings

Kitchen extracts in New Barnet
The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 32 pubs and bars across New Barnet and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Food hygiene inspections in New Barnet are the job of Barnet council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. London Fire Brigade covers New Barnet. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.
If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Holy Trinity Lyonsdown or elsewhere in New Barnet, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Barnet General Hospital (about 2 miles west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Bursars and site managers at schools such as St Mary's CofE Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

What else we do in New Barnet
The process
We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your photos. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Expect the work in New Barnet to happen after your last customer leaves, not during trading.
- We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
- Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
- Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

What your team can do, and what needs us
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
