Canopy cleaning in Lower Sheering
Grease troughs, seams and the inside edge of the canopy are the spots a daily wipe misses. We scrape the heavy deposits, then degrease the surfaces with methods that suit the build-up, using hot water or steam where it helps. Common call-outs are for wet, greasy drips from the hood and smoke hanging around the canopy during service, on canopy light fittings, grease gutters and baffle filters.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.
A written report with photos follows each visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Different parts, different methods
Grease troughs and gutters
Drips from the canopy edge often start in a full gutter. Cleaning it clears the drip.
Pub and hotel kitchens
Staff in pub and hotel kitchens work under the canopy all day, so a dripping hood quickly becomes everyone’s problem. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.
Canopy cleaning around Lower Sheering
Food Standards Agency records list about 18 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 5 sandwich bars and takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central Lower Sheering. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Environmental health officers from Epping Forest council inspect food businesses in Lower Sheering. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Lower Sheering sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Herts and Essex Hospital is the nearest hospital to Lower Sheering, about 4 miles north. Where a hall near Parish Church of Great St Mary's, or anywhere in Lower Sheering, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. A kitchen near Sawbridgeworth station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

Why it’s worth doing now in Lower Sheering
When grease clogs the filters and plenum, the canopy cannot draw air as it should. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line, and the fan works harder for less. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. A planned visit to Lower Sheering is easier to arrange than an emergency callout.
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

What we do, step by step
There’s very little for your team to do on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and we take it from there. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Lower Sheering knowing what to expect.
- We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
- Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
- With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.
How to prepare
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
Getting a quote
Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Advice
Lower Sheering questions
Can you get to a site in Lower Sheering?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Lower Sheering?
Lower Sheering is in the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Can you look after several sites?
Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so sites at different addresses can be planned together on one programme. Every site has its own report.
Who is the responsible person?
It depends on the building. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.
Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?
Most commercial kitchen canopies, from one small hood to a long run of canopies. We work out the approach when we survey, from pictures or a visit.
Are you accredited?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. Work is timed around how each site runs.
Will I get a report after the canopy clean?
Every clean comes with a photo report, listing what was cleaned. A full TR19 clean adds a certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Between visits
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
- Check all filters are fitted before service
- Wipe the canopy down at close every day
We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.
A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.
Multi-site and managed buildings
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We are happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
What affects the quote in Lower Sheering
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- Parking and loading at the site
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.
What we need to know
What to send for a quote:
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- The site address and the type of premises
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.
