About our canopy cleaning in Longlands
Canopy cleans are done out of hours: evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. The equipment underneath is switched off, left to cool and sheeted so the kitchen is ready when we go. Typical jobs include heavy deposits behind the grease filters and filters that never seem to stay clean, on grease gutters, wall canopies and plenum chambers.
Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, and the duct may run up through several floors before it discharges at the roof. For a kitchen in Longlands, that typically means a longer system to clean and more access panels to plan around.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

How the job changes from site to site
Wall canopies
The back of a wall canopy is hard to reach and easy to miss. With the filters out we can get to it and scrape it clean.
Grease troughs and gutters
A blocked or full trough is the usual cause of grease dripping from the canopy. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.
Leave it or put it right?
If the canopy waits for the next full clean, grease keeps adding up. In a busy kitchen, the canopy and plenum can need attention between TR19 cleans, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. London buildings are shared, so a fire or failure in one system can reach the neighbours above and beside you.
You will not find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will explain what it covers.

Longlands questions
Does London parking affect a job in Longlands?
London parking can be tight, so details of loading bays and permits help. Where restrictions apply in the day, an evening or overnight visit typically gets round them.
Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Longlands?
In Longlands, it’s Bexley council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
What does TR19 mean?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?
A canopy-only clean is possible, but it is not a full TR19 clean. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.
Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?
Filters are removed so we can clean the plenum and housing, then cleaned and refitted. Between cleans, a filter exchange service can keep them in good order.
How much of the canopy do you clean?
We clean the canopy inside and out, including the seams, troughs and gutters. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned as well.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, to suit the system and how it’s used.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we’ve been trading since 2009.
How the visit works
The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes a few hours for most canopies, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. In a London area like Longlands, parking, loading and building access are planned before the day of the work.
- The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.
Getting ready for the visit
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Move anything stored near the system
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

Related advice
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
What affects the quote in Longlands
The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- The condition of the system
- How many systems or sites are involved
- A single visit or a regular plan
Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before work begins.
Asking for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- The postcode and the type of business
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
To get a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll usually have a quote within one working day.
What we are called out for in Longlands
However carefully a kitchen in Longlands is run, the canopy still collects grease. It’s fuel, sitting directly over the burners, which is why a flare-up near a dirty canopy is so dangerous.
What we’re most often called out for:
- A hood coated in old grease
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
- Filters that clog soon after cleaning
Commuter trade near New Eltham station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.
Before booking anyone
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- How VAT is shown on the quote
- When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
- What records you’ll receive afterwards
Keeping the system healthy
So the system stays in good health:
- Check all filters are fitted before service
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.
A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.
Canopy cleaning around Longlands
There are about 116 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 39 takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Longlands, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
