About our canopy cleaning in Long Ditton
Canopy cleaning is part of every full TR19® Grease clean, but some sites need the canopy done between full cleans. In that case, the report makes clear what was and wasn’t cleaned, so your records stay accurate. We’re often asked to deal with grease filters blocking between washes and condensation and grease dripping together, across baffle filters, canopy light fittings and wall canopies.
London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, and the duct may run up through several floors before it discharges at the roof. For a kitchen in Long Ditton, that typically means a longer system to clean and more access panels to plan around.
We have been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

How the job changes from site to site
Wall canopies
A long wall canopy may hold several sections of filters. Each section’s plenum and housing is cleaned in turn, with photos for each.
Island canopies
Island canopies often have filters on two sides. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.

Long Ditton questions
Can the work in Long Ditton be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. That way a site in Long Ditton does not have to lose a day’s trading. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your opening times and we will plan around them.
Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Long Ditton in the summer holidays?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Around Long Ditton, the Food Standards Agency lists about 29 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the dates the site is empty.
Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?
You can have the canopy cleaned on its own, but it will not cover the ductwork or fan. TR19 Grease covers everything the grease travels through, at intervals set by BESA guidance.
What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?
A photo report shows the canopy and plenum before and after. Full system cleans also come with a TR19 certificate.
What information do you need?
Some pictures and a quick description of the system, with the address and opening hours. We’ll ask for anything else we need.
How do you protect the area?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes. We always survey first, either from pictures and details you send or on a site visit. A fixed quote follows.
The process
Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Loading bays, visitor permits and roof access are the first things we ask about for a site in Long Ditton.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
- Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.
Before we arrive
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

What your team can do, and what needs us
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.
Managing agents and facilities teams in Long Ditton
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Long Ditton and across Greater London. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.
Long Ditton kitchens: local notes
There are about 126 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 53 takeaways and sandwich shops within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Long Ditton, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. In Long Ditton, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Kingston-Upon-Thames council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Fire safety in Long Ditton falls to London Fire Brigade. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St Mary or elsewhere in Long Ditton, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Tolworth Hospital (about 1.3 miles east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

What a clean won’t put right
Before you book, it helps to know what’s not included:
- Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
- A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking.
What the work covers

- Plenum chambers
- Grease gutters
- Island canopies
- Canopy light fittings
- Baffle filters
Common problems we fix in Long Ditton
Grease does not build up any differently in Long Ditton: the hours and the type of cooking decide how fast. Frying and grilling load a canopy far faster than steaming or boiling.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Filters that never seem to stay clean
- Poor capture at the hood
- Drips from the canopy onto the range
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
Commuter trade near Surbiton station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.
