Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Greatness
Canopy cleans are done out of hours: after service, overnight or at the weekend. Cooking equipment is turned off and cooled, then covered, and the kitchen is left ready for the next service. We’re often asked to deal with greasy streaks across the canopy and smoke hanging around the canopy during service, across island canopies, grease gutters and wall canopies.
In a smaller place like Greatness, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Canopy cleaning around Greatness
According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 11 pubs, bars and clubs and about 3 hotels and guest houses in and around Greatness, up to about a mile and a half out. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. In Greatness, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Sevenoaks council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. The fire and rescue service for Greatness is Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.
For kitchens close to Bat & Ball station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight. Bursars and site managers at schools such as St John's Church of England Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Honest limits
In fairness, some problems need a different fix:
- Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
- Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Aftercare tips
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
- Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
Keep the photo report with your maintenance log where an inspector can see it. Before and after photos speak for themselves.
Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It will not replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.
Questions from Greatness
Do you cover smaller places like Greatness?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Can school kitchens in Greatness be cleaned in the holidays?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. There are about 18 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Greatness. Just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.
What does canopy cleaning cost?
We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. We fix the price before work begins.
What should I send you?
Some pictures and a quick description of the system, with the address and opening hours. We will ask for anything else we need.
How long will it take to clean the canopy?
It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. We’ll confirm how long when we quote.
Which sectors do you work in?
Commercial premises of every kind: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. Work is timed around how each site runs.
Are you insured?
Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and the details are available on request.
What do you do to protect the area?
We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before we start, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.
The process
A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, make the system safe, carry out the canopy cleaning, clear away and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Visits to a place like Greatness are planned ahead, so we arrive with what the survey says the job needs.
- First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
- Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
- With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.
Before we arrive
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

What we are called out for in Greatness
The plenum is hidden behind the filters, so nobody sees it build up. Daily cleaning reaches the canopy face but rarely gets further, leaving the plenum and housing to collect grease between professional cleans.
Any of these means the system needs a check-up:
- Grease channels that no longer drain
- Condensation and grease dripping together
- Greasy streaks across the canopy
- Poor capture at the hood
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St John the Baptist or elsewhere in Greatness, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
What your quote should include
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
Different parts, different methods
Wall canopies
A long wall canopy may hold several sections of filters. Each section’s plenum and housing is cleaned in turn, with photos for each.
Pub and hotel kitchens
A hotel or pub kitchen can rarely close for long. Canopy cleans are done late at night or early in the morning so the kitchen keeps trading.
What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
You’ll get a fixed price before work begins. It’s based on:
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- What state the system is in
- Site rules, permits and inductions
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.
Helping us quote
Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Useful things to send:
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- Wide photos of the system and the area around it
If you need canopy cleaning in Greatness, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, and send pictures or your last report if you can. We normally send a fixed quote within one working day.
