Canopy cleaning near Felderland

What staff can safely do

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Canopy cleaning in Felderland, done properly

A kitchen team can wipe the outside of a canopy, but the seams, gutters and inner skin need more. We scrape the heavy deposits, then degrease the surfaces with methods that suit the build-up, using hot water or steam where it helps. If you are dealing with an EHO comment about the canopy and filters that never seem to stay clean, we can put it right.

For a kitchen in or near Felderland, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

The report is your system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

The process

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes a few hours for most canopies, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Felderland, let us know and we will plan around it.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site

Ask for a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

What we’re called out for in Felderland

The canopy takes the hottest, wettest air in the kitchen. Fat in that air settles on the inside of the hood, in its seams and on the filters, and the plenum behind them collects the rest.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • A hood coated in old grease

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Sandwich Technology School or anywhere near Felderland, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Comparing quotes

  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether a written report and photos are included

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Canopy cleaning in Felderland: the local picture

Sea air reaches Felderland, which sits within about 3 miles of the coast. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 5 pubs and bars within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Felderland. Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. It’s Dover council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Felderland. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Peter and St Paul or anywhere around Felderland, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Goodnestone Park is about 4.7 miles west), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • The condition of the system
  • The number of sites or systems
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • Any permits to work or inductions

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.

What we need to know

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Questions from Felderland

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Felderland?

Fire safety enforcement in Felderland is handled by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Can you get to a site in Felderland?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Felderland included. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Every site has its own report.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not usually. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits to keep things running.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

By covering it before any work starts. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.

How far ahead should we book?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

Every clean comes with a photo report that lists what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach. Where the whole system is cleaned, you also get a TR19 certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Looking after it afterwards

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Check all filters are fitted before service
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle

A before and after photo report follows the clean. It notes what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, so the record is honest and complete.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It won’t replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.

Different parts, different methods

School and staff canteen kitchens

Canteen staff see the canopy, not the duct behind it. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. That’s a lot of grease on the canopy, so it may need cleaning between full TR19 cleans.
