Canopy cleaning in Farthing Street

Canopy cleaning in Farthing Street, done properly

Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. Being first in line, it collects grease on the inside surfaces, along the seams and in the troughs. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. Common call-outs are for a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and filters that clog soon after cleaning, on baffle filters, canopy light fittings and grease gutters.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In Farthing Street, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

The paperwork matters as much as the work. You get a written report with pictures after each visit, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

Between visits

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood

Anything worth knowing goes into the report: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. It’s a short list of what to watch, not a sales pitch.

Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.

Kitchen extracts in Farthing Street

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 11 restaurants, cafés and canteens within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Farthing Street. Any of those kitchens with a canopy has a hood that needs cleaning inside and out. Night work suits London kitchens, and roads and loading bays tend to be quieter too. Farthing Street is covered by London Fire Brigade. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Farthing Street is Princess Royal University Hospital, about 1.4 miles north. Where a hall near St Mary's Church, or anywhere in Farthing Street, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Downe Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Common questions in Farthing Street

Which council inspects kitchens in Farthing Street?

In Farthing Street, it’s Bromley council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

What do you need to know about parking in Farthing Street?

We plan it in advance, so let us know about loading bays, permits and access rules at the building. Working overnight, as we often do in London, typically makes it simpler.

Can you clean the canopy outside our opening hours?

We clean when the kitchen is closed: after service, overnight or before opening. The range must be switched off and cooled first.

How do you protect the area?

We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Full gutters and a heavily coated plenum are the common causes. With nowhere to collect, the grease overflows, and condensation can carry it too. Cleaning the canopy and plenum clears it.

Are the filters cleaned too?

We take them out, clean them and put them back. Between cleans, a filter exchange service can keep them in good order.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. That’s generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and where several people have control, each can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes, always. We diagnose before we treat: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it, and the quote is based on that.

What affects the quote in Farthing Street

Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • How easy every part is to reach
  • The size of the system
  • What state the system is in
  • Whether several sites go on one quote

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before work begins.

What to send for a quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it

Need a price for canopy cleaning? Please phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with a few details about the site. We will talk you through the work and send you a fixed quote before you commit to anything.

When it’s something else

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • A light fitting that does not work
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Wall canopies
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters

What the work involves, part by part

Pub and hotel kitchens

Staff in pub and hotel kitchens work under the canopy all day, so a dripping hood quickly becomes everyone’s problem. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

Grease troughs and gutters

Many canopies have troughs or gutters around the edge to catch running grease. They’re emptied and cleaned during the job, so they can do their job again.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Why act early in Farthing Street

A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. London buildings are shared, so a fire or failure in one system can reach the neighbours above and beside you.

You will not find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we will talk you through it.

What we do, step by step

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. We fit London jobs around the building rather than the other way round, so a visit in Farthing Street is typically out of hours.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by pictures or in person.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Clean filters are refitted and before and after pictures go into your report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids

Ask for a quote

There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, and then give you a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.
