Different parts, different methods

Grease troughs and gutters

Grease channels around the canopy collect what runs down the inside. They’re emptied and cleaned during the job, so they can do their job again.

School and staff canteen kitchens

A canteen canopy may cook fewer hours, but it still collects grease. The whole system still needs cleaning at least every 12 months under BESA guidance, and the canopy is part of it.

Canopy cleaning in Egypt

Think of the canopy as the mouth of the extract. If it’s coated in grease, everything downstream gets more of it. Our diagnosis starts there, and the cure is a thorough clean of the hood, the plenum and the filter housing. If you have grease dripping from the canopy edge and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector, we can help.

Work in a small place like Egypt starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with photos, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. File it in your maintenance log so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

What we’re called out for in Egypt

However carefully a kitchen in Egypt is run, the canopy still collects grease. That grease is fuel sitting right above the heat, which is why a flare-up near a dirty canopy is so dangerous.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
  • Condensation running down the canopy

A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Ebenezer Methodist Chapel or elsewhere in Egypt, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

What your quote should include

  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • Whether VAT is included
  • What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach

Questions from Egypt

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Egypt?

Egypt is in the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Can the work in Egypt be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in Egypt does not have to lose a day’s trading. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

What happens to the filters during the clean?

Filters are removed so we can clean the plenum and housing, then cleaned and refitted. We also offer a filter exchange service for between cleans.

What is TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

A photo report, with before and after pictures of the canopy and plenum. It also gives a recommended date for the next clean.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Only a few details: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. After that, simply call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

What about areas you can’t get to?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

What do you do to protect the area?

By covering it before any work starts. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.

What happens on the day

A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, make the system safe, carry out the canopy cleaning, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. For a village or hamlet like Egypt, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Out of hours, the range is switched off, cooled and covered.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids

Ask for a quote

To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, a few photos and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Then call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

What happens if it’s left?

Grease dripping from the hood can fall onto food, pans and worktops. It’s a food hygiene concern as much as a fire concern, and environmental health officers look at the cleanliness of equipment, extraction included. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

You won’t find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we’ll talk you through it.

Keeping the system healthy

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
  • Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily

Keep the photo report with your maintenance log, so it’s ready when an EHO, insurer or fire officer asks. Before and after photos speak for themselves.

Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Grease, kitchens and Egypt

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 3 hotels and guest houses across Egypt and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Environmental health officers from Winchester City council inspect food businesses in Egypt. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Egypt. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Whether the kitchen is in Egypt itself or nearby, a TR19® clean covers the whole system, canopy to discharge.

When something else is needed

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what canopy cleaning will not do:

  • Electrical faults in the canopy
  • Bent or broken filters
  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy

If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.
