Chitty canopy cleaning
We cover Chitty for deep cleaning of kitchen canopies, hoods, plenums and grease filters, inside and out. Out-of-hours visits, a fixed quote and a written report with photos on every job.
- Condensation and grease dripping together
- A filter housing caked in grease
- An EHO comment about the canopy
How it works
Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. All told, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Visits to a village like Chitty are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.
- We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
- Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
- We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
- We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
- Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Clear the space around the work
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
Ask for a quote
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

How we handle canopy cleaning in Chitty
Dripping edges and a sticky hood are the first things a visitor notices. Under the surface, the plenum behind the filters is usually in a worse state. We clean both, so the canopy is clean where it shows and where it doesn’t. Common call-outs are for poor capture at the hood and fat running down the front of the hood, across canopy light fittings, plenum chambers and wall canopies.
Work in a small place like Chitty starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Chitty kitchens: local notes
Chitty is within about 3 miles of the coast. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. Kent Fire and Rescue Service covers Chitty. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Food hygiene inspections in Chitty are the job of Canterbury City council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
A hospital like St Martins Hospital, about 5.8 miles south-west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Mary the Virgin or elsewhere in Chitty, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. For schools such as Chislet Church of England Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.
Chitty is about 4 miles south-east of Herne Bay, in Kent. Anywhere in CT3, we can take on canopy cleaning. Our area takes in 922 places across Kent, from busy centres to quieter spots. Our Maidstone page covers sites nearby, about 29 miles away.
Work in CT3 follows the same survey, fixed quote and written report as everywhere else we cover. Neighbouring places we cover for canopy cleaning include Chislet (1 mile west), Hollow Street (1 mile south-west), Boyden Gate (1 mile north-west), Old Tree (1 mile west) and Highstead (1 mile north-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Canterbury (7 miles south-west), Margate (9 miles east), Dover (14 miles south), Ramsgate (9 miles east), Broadstairs (10 miles east) and Whitstable (7 miles west).
Local landmarks in Chitty
Around Chitty, our work takes us to kitchens and buildings near Grove Ferry Picnic Area, among other places. Chitty’s nearest station is Herne Bay station, about 4 miles north-west of the centre. A little further out are St Martins Hospital (5.8 miles south-west). Green spaces nearby include West Blean and Thornden Woods.
What staff can safely do
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Chitty questions
Does the sea air around Chitty make a difference to canopy cleaning?
It can. Chitty is within about 3 miles of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion. A fan housing that’s rusting near the coast can fail sooner, so it’s worth catching early.
Which environmental health team covers Chitty?
In Chitty, it’s Canterbury City council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
Which sectors do you work in?
Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.
What does TR19 mean?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping, and it takes a risk-based approach.
What do you do to protect the area?
We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before we start, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.
Who is the responsible person?
The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. In shared or managed buildings, a landlord, facilities manager or managing agent can share the duty.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes, always. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We carry full insurance, and we have been trading since 2009.
Why it’s worth doing now in Chitty
Fresh grease comes off far more easily than old. Over months, the heat hardens it into a stubborn coating, which makes a later clean slower and harder. With notice, the visit to Chitty can be fitted around your bookings and events.
The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. We give you a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.
Why us?
- Evenings, overnight and weekends, plus 24/7 emergency callout
- We diagnose before we treat
- CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with ISO 9001
- A fixed price before any work starts

For landlords and multi-site operators
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.
Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

What canopy cleaning cannot fix
We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:
- A light fitting that doesn’t work
- A hood that does not cover the cooking line
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think.
Parts of the system we cover
- Island canopies
- Baffle filters
- Plenum chambers
- Wall canopies
- Canopy light fittings
- Grease gutters
Part by part
Wall canopies
A wall-mounted canopy runs along the back of the range. Grease often collects where the canopy meets the wall, so we clean along it as well as the inner skin.
Island canopies
An island canopy is open on all sides, which means grease settles on all four sides. We clean all of them, inside and out.
Keeping the system healthy
Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:
- Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
- Never run the range with a filter out
Anything worth knowing goes into the report: damaged filters, gaps around the housing or troughs that need emptying more often. We keep it to what matters.
Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It doesn’t reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.
