About our canopy cleaning in Bix

Canopy cleaning is part of every full TR19® Grease clean, but some sites need the canopy done between full cleans. Where that is the case, we will be clear that the ducts and fan are not included, so your records stay accurate. The work covers canopy light fittings, baffle filters and wall canopies, and people most often call us about heavy deposits behind the grease filters and smoke hanging around the canopy during service.

For a kitchen in or near Bix, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Keeping the system healthy

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Never run the range with a filter out
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Check filters are not leaving gaps
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill

The kitchen is handed back clean, with the sheeting gone and the waste removed. Every filter is refitted and checked, and the kitchen is ready to cook.

Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.

Leave it or put it right?

A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. Smoke and heat hang around the cooking line, and the fan works harder for less. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. If the system at a site near Bix fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.

You won’t find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we’ll explain what it covers.

What happens on the day

We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before we start, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Bix, let us know and we will plan around it.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Move anything stored near the system

Advice

What the work involves, part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. That is a lot of grease on the canopy, and canopy cleans between full cleans can help.

Common questions in Bix

Who inspects food businesses in Bix?

Food hygiene inspections in Bix are carried out by South Oxfordshire council. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Bix?

That’s Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

What do you do to protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

Do you work in Bix?

Yes. Bix is part of the area we cover, as part of our area across London and the South East.

Are you insured?

Yes. We’re fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

Do you provide photos of the cleaned canopy?

You get a photo report with before and after photos. If the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19 clean, a TR19 certificate is issued too.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.

How much of the canopy do you clean?

The full canopy, inside and out, and the plenum behind it. Grease troughs and filter channels are emptied and degreased as part of the job.

How we price canopy cleaning

You’ll get a fixed price before work begins. It’s based on:

  • The times the site is available
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • Site rules, permits and inductions

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

What we need to know

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Your last certificate, test record or report

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Common problems we fix in Bix

A canopy with gaps around its filters lets grease straight through. More grease reaches the plenum and housing than they’re designed to take, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St James or elsewhere in Bix, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

Bix kitchens: local notes

In Bix, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from South Oxfordshire council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Bix is covered by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Honest limits

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • A dirty extract fan further along the system
