How we handle canopy cleaning in Bedford Park
We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Common call-outs are for condensation and grease dripping together and canopy gutters full of old fat, across grease gutters, canopy light fittings and baffle filters.
London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, and the duct may run up through several floors before it discharges at the roof. In Bedford Park, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.
The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with pictures of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

What the work involves, part by part
Wall canopies
The back of a wall canopy is hard to reach and easy to miss. With the filters out we can get to it and scrape it clean.
Grease troughs and gutters
Some troughs drain to a cup or drawer, that is emptied and cleaned too, and we will show staff where it is.

Bedford Park kitchens: local notes
Food Standards Agency data counts about 435 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 140 takeaways and sandwich shops within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Bedford Park. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. London Fire Brigade covers Bedford Park. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Night work suits London kitchens, and roads and loading bays tend to be quieter too.
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital is the nearest hospital to Bedford Park, about 1.5 miles north-east. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Peter's or elsewhere in Bedford Park, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. Commuter trade near South Acton station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.

For landlords and multi-site operators
Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.
When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.
What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
The price is fixed before any work begins. It takes into account:
- The condition of the system
- Parking and loading at the site
- The number of sites or systems
- The size of the system
You will not find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we will talk you through it.
What we need to know
When you contact us, these details help:
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Any previous report or certificate
- A few general shots of the system
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll typically have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
What canopy cleaning can’t fix
To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:
- Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
- Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that is a design question)
Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.
How it works
There’s very little for your team to do on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. If your building in Bedford Park has sign-in rules, permits or key holders, mention them when you book.
- First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
- Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
- We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
- We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
Getting a quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Aftercare tips
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Check all filters are fitted before service
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Wipe the canopy down at close every day
- Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.
A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It doesn’t reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.
Questions from Bedford Park
Can the work in Bedford Park be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The site is handed back ready to open. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Bedford Park during the holidays?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 50 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Bedford Park. Send us your term dates when you ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, and we’ll fit the work in.
How much does canopy cleaning cost?
Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. For a quote, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us about the site and its opening hours.
Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?
The law calls them the responsible person. That is generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
Are you insured?
Yes, fully. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor for clients who vet their contractors.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you’ll get one fixed quote.
