Acol canopy cleaning
Deep cleaning of kitchen canopies, hoods, plenums and grease filters, inside and out for commercial sites in Acol and across Kent. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and fully insured.
- A hood coated in old grease
- Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
- Condensation running down the canopy
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Canopy cleaning in Acol
Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. Where that’s the case, we will be clear that the ducts and fan are not included, so your records stay accurate. The work covers baffle filters, canopy light fittings and island canopies, and the jobs we see most are an EHO comment about the canopy and a filter housing caked in grease.
Work in a small place like Acol starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
The paperwork matters as much as the work. You get a written report with photos after every visit, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

How the job changes from site to site
Grease troughs and gutters
Drips from the canopy edge often start in a full gutter. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.
Island canopies
An island canopy is open on all sides, which means grease settles on all four sides. We clean all of them, inside and out.
How the visit works
There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. The middle part takes longest, which takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Acol knowing what to expect.
- We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
- Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
- Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.
Getting ready for the visit
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
How to get a quote
There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us.
Advice
Keeping the system healthy
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. Our tips:
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
- Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
- Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.
Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.
Common questions in Acol
Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Acol in the summer holidays?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. The FSA’s register shows about 2 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Acol. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your term dates and we will plan around them.
Can you get to a site in Acol?
Yes, Acol is part of our area, however small the site. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.
How much does canopy cleaning cost?
The cost depends on the size of the system, its condition, access and timing. Ask us for a fixed quote, usually ready within one working day.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.
Can you clean the canopy outside our opening hours?
Out-of-hours cleans are how we work, at night, early in the morning or at weekends. The kitchen is handed back ready to cook.
What information do you need?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few pictures and any previous report.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Not typically. The area we’re working in has to be out of use while we are there, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.
What is TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
Managing agents and facilities teams in Acol
From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.
When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
Acol kitchens: local notes
Acol is within about 2 miles of the coast. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. There are about 19 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 5 sandwich bars and takeaways in and around Acol, up to about a mile and a half out, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. It’s Thanet council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Acol. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.
Church and community hall kitchens, near St Mildreds Church or anywhere around Acol, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Quex Park is about 0.8 miles north-east), access may need planning.
Acol is about 4 miles south-west of Margate, in Kent. Wherever you are in the CT7 postcode area, we cover canopy cleaning for commercial sites. Our area takes in 922 places across Kent, from busy centres to quieter spots. Our Maidstone page covers sites nearby, about 35 miles away.

We also cover Mount Pleasant (1 mile south), Birchington (1 mile north), Way (1 mile south-east), Minster (2 miles south) and Westgate-on-Sea (2 miles north-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Canterbury (11 miles south-west), Margate (4 miles north-east), Dover (15 miles south), Ramsgate (4 miles east), Broadstairs (5 miles east) and Whitstable (12 miles west).
Landmarks near Acol
Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to King Ethelbert School and Crown & Sceptre pub. The closest station to Acol is Birchington-On-Sea station, roughly 1.5 miles north. Other landmarks nearby include Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital (3.6 miles north-east) and Powell-Cotton Museum (0.7 miles north). Not far away are Sandwich and Pegwell Bay.
What a clean won’t put right
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- A dirty extract fan further along the system
- A canopy undersized for the equipment
- Electrical faults in the canopy
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll tell you honestly.

When to call us in Acol
Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, so fat ends up running down the front of the hood.
Look out for any of the following:
- A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
- A hood coated in old grease
- Fat running down the front of the hood
- Condensation running down the canopy
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Birchington Church of England Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
