Whetsted kitchens: local notes

Look up Whetsted on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 18 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 7 sandwich bars and takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Whetsted. For any of them with a canopy, measuring grease is better than guessing when to clean. Food hygiene inspections in Whetsted are the job of Tunbridge Wells council’s environmental health team. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Whetsted is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Where a hall near Five Oak Green Church, or anywhere in Whetsted, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Whetsted is Tunbridge Wells Hospital, about 4.1 miles south-west.

About our TR19 inspection in Whetsted

If you’ve taken over a kitchen in Whetsted and do not know when the extract was last cleaned, an inspection is the place to start. We survey the system, measure the grease and tell you what needs doing, so the next step is based on facts. The work covers insurer audits, deposit thickness tests and access surveys, and the jobs we see most are missing TR19 certificates or history and ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits.

Somewhere as small as Whetsted, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What affects the cost of TR19 inspection

Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • The number of sites or systems
  • How easy every part is to reach
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing

No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

Asking for a quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before we start.

When something else is needed

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what TR19 inspection will not do:

  • Mechanical faults in the extract
  • Sections with no access, until panels are fitted
  • Ductwork that was designed or installed badly

If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Where we work

  • Pre-clean surveys
  • Insurer audits
  • Wet film thickness tests
  • Post-clean checks
  • Access surveys
  • Deposit thickness tests

How the job changes from site to site

Extract fan and discharge

Grease builds up on the fan blades and inside the housing. They’re included in the readings and pictures.

Canopy and plenum

Clean-looking filters don’t mean a clean plenum. That is why we test behind them.

Multi-site and managed buildings

If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

Why it’s worth doing now in Whetsted

Finding a hotspot early means a targeted spot clean rather than a bigger problem later. Left alone, grease keeps building between cleans. With notice, the visit to Whetsted can be fitted around your bookings and events.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

Why book with us

  • CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with ISO 9001
  • Survey first, then a fixed quote
  • One contact for all your sites in London and the South East
  • A fixed price before any work starts

Read our cost guide and how to check a contractor.

How it works

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes anything from an hour for a small canopy and short duct to a good part of a day for a large site. For a village or hamlet like Whetsted, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. We go through any past certificates and reports.
  2. We follow the extract from canopy to discharge.
  3. Access panels are located and any missing ones noted.
  4. Grease readings are taken and photos recorded.
  5. We report back with readings and a fixed quote.

How to prepare

  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

Getting a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Your questions about TR19 inspection in Whetsted

Do you cover smaller places like Whetsted?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Whetsted is covered. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Can the work in Whetsted be done at night or at weekends?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. It means the site in Whetsted keeps running as normal. Let us know the hours you are closed and we’ll book within them.

Do we have to follow TR19 by law?

No, TR19® isn’t legislation. The Fire Safety Order 2005 still requires the responsible person to manage fire risk, and grease in the extract is part of that. Many insurance policies also require TR19 adherence.

Can you verify a clean after it’s been done?

Verification means repeat readings and photos once the clean is done. The report flags anything missed.

Is a quote from photos possible?

Often, yes. With good photos, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Where we cannot see enough, we arrange a survey.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with the emergency line covering every other hour.

What do the grease readings need to be?

The TR19® Grease figures are a mean of 200 microns or less between cleans, and immediate spot cleaning wherever a reading hits 500 microns. We show your readings against those figures.

What we are called out for in Whetsted

Records can go missing when a business changes hands or contractors. Without them, nobody knows how much grease is in the system or when it was last cleaned.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
  • Missing TR19 certificates or history
  • Checking the result of a recent clean
  • Parts of the system left out of past cleans

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Paddock Wood Primary School or anywhere near Whetsted, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

What your quote should include

  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • Whether a survey comes first
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • What records you’ll receive afterwards
