Kitchen extracts in Whetsted
The Food Standards Agency lists about 5 pubs, bars and clubs as registered food businesses within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Whetsted. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Environmental health officers from Tunbridge Wells council inspect food businesses in Whetsted. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Kent Fire and Rescue Service covers Whetsted. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Paddock Wood Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. A kitchen near Paddock Wood station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

Ductwork cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Whetsted
Many ducts were installed with too few access doors. Where a section cannot be reached, TR19 expects it to be recorded on the report, and we can fit new access panels so it’s cleaned next time. It’s better to know than to assume. The work covers attenuators, access panels and horizontal duct runs, and common reasons people get in touch are duct runs with no cleaning record and proof of duct cleaning for the insurer.
Somewhere as small as Whetsted, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.
We have been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Different parts, different methods
Access panels
Extra panels can be installed where there are gaps, so the next clean reaches more of the system. The survey shows where they’re needed.
Bends and transitions
Wherever the duct turns or changes size, grease builds up. The air slows and drops its load, so we clean these points carefully.
What affects the quote in Whetsted
Sites vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:
- The size of the system
- Any permits to work or inductions
- What state the system is in
- Parking and loading at the site
What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we survey first, from photos or on site, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.
Asking for a quote
Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:
- A few general shots of the system
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll usually have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
For landlords and multi-site operators
If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Between visits
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:
- Never cook with a filter missing
- Don’t block access panels with shelving or stock
- Ask us about extra access panels where sections can’t be reached
- Report any grease dripping from duct joints
A full system clean includes a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. It records the date, the location and the technician.
The less grease gets past the canopy, the cleaner the duct stays. Keep the filters clean, well fitted and in place whenever you cook.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.
How it works
Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points, and we clear up before we go. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Whetsted.
- The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
- Grease thickness is measured at set points.
- Once the kitchen has closed, we protect the area and open the panels.
- Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
- Panels are closed, readings and photos repeated, and unreachable sections recorded.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
Ask for a quote
For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. We typically come back within one working day.
Related advice
When to call us in Whetsted
Grease filters that don’t seal let fat straight through. More grease reaches the ductwork than it should, and build-up speeds up.
The symptoms we’re asked about most include:
- Proof of duct cleaning for the insurer
- Thick deposits at the bottom of a vertical duct
- Thick crusts of old grease along the duct
- Readings above 200 microns from a grease thickness test
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Five Oak Green Church, or anywhere in Whetsted, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
Questions to ask before you book
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
- Whether the price is fixed
- Whether a survey comes first

Can you work in Whetsted outside opening hours?

Yes, as part of our fits and repairs work. Panels go where they give the best access to sections that couldn’t be reached, and we will recommend where.
