TR19 inspection for kitchens and businesses in Westwood
A pre-clean survey is the diagnosis, and the clean is the treatment. Readings, pictures and notes on access are gathered from end to end, so the clean can be planned properly. If you are dealing with missing access panels found on survey and extracts that have never been grease tested, we can put it right, from pre-clean surveys, insurer audits and access surveys onwards.
Somewhere as small as Westwood, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

What TR19 inspection looks like in Westwood
Westwood is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Kitchens in Westwood get their food hygiene inspections from Canterbury City council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.
Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Westwood is Kent and Canterbury Hospital, about 4.2 miles north. If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Westwood (Acrise Place is about 4.9 miles south), fitting access panels needs care. Where a hall near Church of St Peter and St Paul, or anywhere in Westwood, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

When something else is needed
We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so these are the things it will not cover:
- The grease itself, which needs a full or spot clean
- Mechanical faults in the extract
- Sections with no access, until panels are fitted
If you’re not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Parts of the system we cover
- Pre-clean surveys
- Wet film thickness tests
- Access surveys
- Deposit thickness tests
- Insurer audits
- Post-clean checks
Part by part
Canopy and plenum
Clean-looking filters don’t mean a clean plenum. So we measure behind the filters, not just in front.
Restaurants, pubs and hotels
A kitchen running from breakfast to late service builds grease quickly. Readings show if the cleans are frequent enough.
Westwood questions
Do you cover smaller places like Westwood?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Westwood included. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Do you work overnight in Westwood?
Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. It means the site in Westwood keeps running as normal. Just call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.
What types of premises do you cover?
Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.
What is TR19?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.
What does a pre-clean survey involve?
It’s a look at the whole extract before it’s cleaned, with readings and photos. We can work from pictures and details, or visit, as suits the job.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
We never leave them off the paperwork. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.
Can you inspect our extract for our insurance company?
Yes. Many insurers ask for proof of TR19 cleaning and inspection, and an audit report gives you that, with recommendations where something needs doing.
The process
Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Westwood and turn up when the site is quiet.
- We agree a time when the kitchen is closed or quiet.
- We look over the canopy, plenum, ducts, fan and discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured at set points by WFTT or DTT.
- Each test point and any access problems are photographed.
- The findings go into a report with readings, pictures and a recommended next clean.
How to prepare
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
Getting a quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
Advice
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Leave it or put it right?
If a kitchen in Westwood has been cleaned on the same calendar for years, there’s no way to know if that interval is right without measuring. Testing gives you the evidence to set it properly. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Westwood rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.
What you pay depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.

Between visits
Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Share inspection reports with your insurer or broker when asked
- Keep canopy edges and gutters wiped down
- Keep the route to access panels clear
- Diary the next grease test and clean
Where sections couldn’t be reached, the report says where access panels would help. Fitting them before the next clean means the whole system gets done.
Keep certificates, reports and readings in one place so you can produce them quickly.
