Wellow: your questions answered
Does coastal air change anything about TR19 inspection in Wellow?
It can, as Wellow is within about 2 miles of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on metal. We look at fans, cowls and fixings for rust as well as grease.
Which fire authority looks after Wellow?
Fire safety enforcement in Wellow is handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
What if parts of the system cannot be reached?
They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.
What do you do with what you remove?
We take it away at the end of the visit. While we work, it’s kept contained so the area stays clean.
When should we have our next grease test?
It depends on how heavily the kitchen cooks. BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals of 3, 6 or 12 months by daily use, and testing shows if your kitchen needs more.
Which accreditations do you hold?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
How much does TR19 inspection cost in Wellow?
It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us about the site and its opening hours.
TR19 inspection in Wellow, done properly
Taking on a kitchen in Wellow with no cleaning records? Start with an inspection. We survey the system, measure the grease and tell you what needs doing, so the next step is based on facts. We’re often asked to deal with insurance renewals needing proof of TR19 cleaning and uncertainty over how often to clean, on pre-clean surveys, wet film thickness tests and insurer audits.
In a village or hamlet like Wellow, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.
Each visit ends with a written report and pictures, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

How the visit works
Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, make the system safe, carry out the TR19 inspection, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. Visits to a village like Wellow are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.
- We go through any past certificates and reports.
- The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
- Access panels are located and any missing ones noted.
- Grease readings are taken and photos recorded.
- We report back with readings and a fixed quote.
How to prepare
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
How to get a quote
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before any work starts.

What TR19 inspection can’t fix
Not every problem is solved by TR19 inspection, and we will tell you before work begins. It doesn’t solve:
- Installation problems, which fall under design guidance such as DW172
- Hidden runs that need access panels first
- The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will say what we think before you book.

What affects the quote in Wellow
Sites vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:
- What state the system is in
- Travel, parking and unloading
- How big the system is
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before work begins.
Helping us quote
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- The site address and the type of premises
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Call or email with a few details and you’ll normally have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
What happens if it’s left?
Catching heavy deposits early keeps the fix small. Left alone, grease keeps building between cleans. Our emergency line runs 24/7, but a planned visit to Wellow is calmer for everyone.
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Looking after it afterwards
Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:
- Keep to the recommended interval
- Flag oily drips near the extract
- File every inspection report with your certificates
- Clean grease off the canopy between professional cleans
Where sections couldn’t be reached, the report says where access panels would help. Fitting them before the next clean means the whole system gets done.
Test grease regularly instead of relying on the calendar. It shows if build-up is speeding up.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
What we’re called out for in Wellow
Kitchens change: a new menu, longer hours or more frying can all add grease. A cleaning interval set years ago may no longer fit.
Most sites get in touch when they notice one of these:
- Insurance renewals needing proof of TR19 cleaning
- Uncertainty over how often to clean
- Checking the result of a recent clean
- Systems that need surveying before cleaning
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Shalfleet Church of England Primary School or anywhere near Wellow, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

What else we do in Wellow
Kitchen extracts in Wellow
Wellow lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Salt air speeds up corrosion of roof-level fans, discharge cowls and their fixings. The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 5 restaurants, cafés and canteens within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Wellow. For any of them with a canopy, measuring grease is better than guessing when to clean. The fire and rescue service for Wellow is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Wellow Baptist Church, or anywhere in Wellow, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Mottistone Manor is about 2.8 miles south), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.
