TR19 inspection in Way

TR19 inspection in Way, done properly

A grease test measures how thick the grease is inside a kitchen extract system. Readings are taken at set points using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). From the numbers, you can see whether cleaning is due. If you have kitchens taken over with no cleaning records and cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen, we can help, from access surveys, pre-clean surveys and deposit thickness tests onwards.

Somewhere as small as Way, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with pictures of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Way: your questions answered

Who inspects food businesses in Way?

Kitchens in Way are inspected by Thanet council’s environmental health officers. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Does being near the coast affect TR19 inspection in Way?

It can. Being within about 3 miles of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Way than inland. A fan housing that is rusting near the coast can fail sooner, so it’s worth catching early.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we are fully insured.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Just the basics: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. After that, simply give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

How do you protect the area?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before we start, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

Do you check other contractors’ cleans?

After a clean, we take new readings and pictures to show how the system was left. It can follow our own cleans or another contractor’s.

How do you measure grease in a kitchen extract?

The Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) and Deposit Thickness Test (DTT) measure how thick the grease is at a given point. Readings are taken at set points through the system.

Which sectors do you work in?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. Work is timed around how each site runs.

Different parts, different methods

Restaurants, pubs and hotels

BESA’s minimum for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day is a clean every 3 months, and readings show whether that’s enough.

Schools, hospitals and care homes

Hospital and care home kitchens can cook all day, every day. Testing shows if the cleaning interval keeps pace.

What happens on the day

Your staff don’t need to do much on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and the rest is down to us. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Way.

  1. We go through any past certificates and reports.
  2. The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
  3. We note where access panels are and where more are needed.
  4. We measure the grease and photograph each point.
  5. You get a report and a fixed quote for the clean.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

What staff can safely do

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.

What affects the quote in Way

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:

  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • How big the system is
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

What we need to know

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

What TR19 inspection can’t fix

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what TR19 inspection will not do:

  • Mechanical faults in the extract
  • Parts of the duct nobody can reach yet
  • Fire safety duties beyond the extract system

If you are not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

What TR19 inspection looks like in Way

Way is within about 3 miles of the coast. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Food Standards Agency data counts about 11 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 4 takeaways across Way and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. Way is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Term dates shape school work: for a school like Minster Church of England Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of Saint Mary the Virgin or anywhere around Way, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. If you run a café or takeaway near Minster station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.

Way is about 3 miles west of Ramsgate, in Kent. Whether your site is in the middle of Way or further out, we cover TR19 inspection for every kind of premises, from a single unit to a large public building. Across Kent, we cover 922 places, Way among them. We also work in Maidstone, around 35 miles away.

Every address in CT12 is covered for TR19 inspection, from busy streets to back roads. If you need TR19 inspection at premises on Wayborough Hill and Way Hill or anywhere close by, we can help. We also cover the places around Way: Mount Pleasant (1 mile north-west), Sevenscore (1 mile south-east), Minster (1 mile west), Acol (1 mile north-west) and Cliffs End (2 miles south-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Canterbury (12 miles west), Margate (4 miles north-east), Dover (14 miles south), Ramsgate (3 miles east), Broadstairs (5 miles east) and Whitstable (13 miles west).

Between visits

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. Our tips:

  • Look out for grease drips round the canopy edge
  • Book the next test on the date in the report
  • Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs
  • Store grease readings where your insurer can see them

If any reading is 500 microns or more, the report flags it for immediate spot cleaning, and we can quote to do it.

Revisit the cleaning interval whenever the menu or hours change. Fresh readings show whether it needs to change.

For landlords and multi-site operators

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
