TR19 inspection for kitchens and businesses in Titchfield Park

Grease thickness testing tells you how much grease is sitting in the canopy, ducts and fan. Readings are taken at set points using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). From the numbers, you can see whether cleaning is due. The work covers insurer audits, deposit thickness tests and access surveys, and people most often call us about checking the result of a recent clean and extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean.

In a village or hamlet like Titchfield Park, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

How the visit works

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. We point out anything that couldn’t be reached or needs a follow-up, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes an hour or two for a single kitchen, longer for a large or complex system. Visits to a village like Titchfield Park are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.

  1. First we book a time that won’t disrupt cooking.
  2. Every part of the system is examined, end to end.
  3. We take WFTT or DTT readings at set points along the system.
  4. Each test point and any access problems are photographed.
  5. You get a report with readings, photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

Getting a quote

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Common problems we fix in Titchfield Park

Looking at a canopy tells you little about what’s in the duct. Clean filters can hide a heavy layer behind them, which is why readings matter.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Sites with gaps in their extract records
  • Pre-clean surveys before a first TR19 clean
  • Systems cleaned on a calendar with no measurements
  • Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Fareham Community Hospital is the nearest hospital to Titchfield Park, about 1.5 miles west.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • Whether a written report and photos are included
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • Whether they’re fully insured

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

How the job changes from site to site

Canopy and plenum

Clean-looking filters do not mean a clean plenum. That’s why we test behind them.

Restaurants, pubs and hotels

Kitchens that cook for long hours build up grease faster. Readings show if the cleans are frequent enough.

How we price TR19 inspection

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • How many systems or sites are involved

Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

Asking for a quote

When you contact us, these details help:

  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To start, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

What TR19 inspection looks like in Titchfield Park

Titchfield Park lies within about 3 miles of the sea. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. There are about 53 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 21 takeaways and sandwich shops within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Titchfield Park, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. Titchfield Park sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Church and community hall kitchens, near St John or anywhere around Titchfield Park, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. For schools such as St Anthony's Catholic Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

Titchfield Park is about 2 miles west of Fareham, in Hampshire. Common questions in Titchfield Park

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Titchfield Park out of term?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Around Titchfield Park, the Food Standards Agency lists about 8 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. You can ring 0345 646 2711 or email us with the dates the site is empty.

Does coastal air change anything about TR19 inspection in Titchfield Park?

Yes, to a degree: at about 3 miles from the coast, Titchfield Park gets salt-laden air that corrodes metal faster. Outdoor metalwork near the sea is worth inspecting at every visit.

What should I send you?

Some pictures and a quick description of the system, with the address and opening hours. If we need more, we will ask.

Can you inspect our extract for our insurance company?

Yes, anywhere in the area we cover. Share the insurer’s request so the report addresses it.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule and quote for it.

What grease levels does TR19 allow?

TR19® Grease says the mean shouldn’t exceed 200 microns between cleans, and anywhere at 500 microns or more needs spot cleaning straight away.

What’s TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you’ll get one fixed quote.

What TR19 inspection can’t fix

TR19 inspection can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • Fan breakdowns, which need a repair visit
  • Hidden runs that need access panels first
  • The legal duty, which stays with the responsible person

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
