TR19 inspection for kitchens and businesses in The Brents

TR19® Grease says grease should not exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. Grease testing shows which side of those lines you’re on. If you are dealing with insurers asking for TR19 evidence and extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean, we can put it right.

In a smaller place like The Brents, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, with the duct running through a roof space or up an outside wall. Long horizontal runs like that hold grease and need access panels to reach.

The paperwork matters as much as the work. Each visit is written up with photos, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

The Brents kitchens: local notes

The Brents lies within about 3 miles of the sea. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. The Food Standards Agency lists about 23 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 3 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses as registered food businesses in The Brents and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Environmental health officers from Swale council inspect food businesses in The Brents. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

A kitchen near Faversham station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval. Church and community hall kitchens, near Faversham Parish Church or anywhere around The Brents, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Leave it or put it right?

If a kitchen in The Brents has been cleaned on the same calendar for years, there’s no way to know if that interval is right without measuring. Measured readings let a competent person set the interval. Light use slows the build-up but does not stop it.

You will not find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

Aftercare tips

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Tell us if menus or opening hours change
  • Do not box in or cover duct access panels
  • Clean grease off the canopy between professional cleans
  • Keep to the recommended interval

The report recommends when the system should next be cleaned and tested, from the measured grease and the kitchen’s hours.

Test grease regularly instead of relying on the calendar. It shows if build-up is speeding up.

Signs you need TR19 inspection in The Brents

Not every section of a kitchen extract is easy to get to, so those sections can be skipped time and again. An inspection of a system in The Brents shows where access panels are missing, so the gaps can be closed.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
  • Cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen
  • Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
  • Ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits

School kitchens, at schools like Davington Primary School for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

What to look for in a quote

  • What paperwork you get at the end
  • What hours they’ll be on site
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • What insurance they carry

What TR19 inspection cannot fix

TR19 inspection cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before we start. It does not solve:

  • Removing the grease, which is a separate clean
  • Fire safety duties beyond the extract system
  • Parts of the duct nobody can reach yet

If you are not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Different parts, different methods

Canopy and plenum

Filters can look fine while the plenum behind them is heavily coated. So we measure behind the filters, not just in front.

Schools, hospitals and care homes

We fit testing around service times and school holidays to avoid disruption.

The Brents: your questions answered

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in The Brents?

The local authority for The Brents is Swale council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Do you cover smaller places like The Brents?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and The Brents is covered. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

How much notice should we give?

Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes normally come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

What does a pre-clean survey involve?

We check the layout, the grease levels and the access, before anyone starts cleaning. Missing access panels are noted ahead of the clean.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.

Can the work be done while we’re closed?

Yes. Much of our work happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so you don’t have to close during trading.

What is grease thickness testing?

Grease thickness testing measures the layer of grease on the duct surfaces, using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). The results are given in microns.

How the visit works

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes an hour or two for a single kitchen, longer for a large or complex system. We plan the journey to The Brents and bring what the job is likely to need.

  1. The visit is arranged for when the kitchen isn’t busy.
  2. Every part of the system is examined, end to end.
  3. Grease readings are taken at set points using WFTT or DTT.
  4. Each test point and any access problems are photographed.
  5. You get a report with readings, photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

Getting a quote

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
