Southwood: your questions answered
Can a school canteen extract in Southwood be done out of term time?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 14 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Southwood. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.
Do you cover smaller places like Southwood?
Yes, Southwood is part of our area, however small the site. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes, of course. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.
What do the grease readings need to be?
TR19® Grease says grease should not go over a mean of 200 microns between cleans. Any reading of 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning.
How long does a TR19 inspection take?
As a guide, it takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. The size of the system and the access make the difference.
Which accreditations do you hold?
Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
How much notice do you need?
Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. We typically quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
Can you quote from photos?
Normally, yes. Send a few wide photos plus close-ups of panels, filters or grilles, and we usually come back within one working day. Some sites still need a visit, and we will say so.
TR19 inspection in Southwood
BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals by daily use: every 3 months for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day, every 6 months for moderate use of 6 to 12 hours, and every 12 months for light use of 2 to 6 hours. Those are minimums, and grease readings help set the real interval. If you’re dealing with an insurer’s request for a TR19 audit and kitchens taken over with no cleaning records, we can put it right.
For a smaller kitchen near Southwood, a TR19® clean is the same job as anywhere: canopy, filters, plenum, duct, fan and discharge. We plan the visit around your hours, with the journey sorted in advance.
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That’s why every job is written up in a report with pictures, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

TR19 inspection in Southwood: the local picture
Food Standards Agency records include about 12 bars, pubs and nightclubs within about 1.5 miles of central Southwood. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Southwood is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. In Southwood, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Rushmoor council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Fleet Community Hospital about 2.2 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St John the Baptist or elsewhere in Southwood, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.
Southwood is about 1 mile west of Farnborough, in Hampshire. Across the GU14 area, we can take on TR19 inspection. Southwood is one of 683 places in Hampshire where we work for commercial clients. We also work in Guildford, about 10 miles from Southwood.
Postcode districts we cover here for TR19 inspection: GU14 and GU51. Streets in the area include Fleet Road, Kennels Lane and Summit Avenue, and we cover them all for TR19 inspection. If your site is just outside Southwood, we cover Cove (1 mile north), Farnborough (1 mile east), North Camp (2 miles east), Mytchett (3 miles east) and Aldershot (3 miles south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Basingstoke (13 miles west), Alton (12 miles south-west), Yateley (4 miles north-west), Bordon (13 miles south), Hook (7 miles west) and Popley (12 miles west).
Near you in Southwood
Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to National Aerospace Library, Ancells Farm Park and Cove School. The nearest railway station is Fleet station, roughly 1.5 miles west of the centre. Nearby you will also find Hart Shopping Centre (2.1 miles west) and Royal Army Dental Corps Historical Museum (2.6 miles south-east). For a walk, there’s Aunt's Pool and Ball Hill.
Between visits
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:
- Flag changes in how much frying the kitchen does
- Flag oily drips near the extract
- Keep grease filters clean and fitted properly
- Send TR19 audit reports to your insurer on request
For an insurer audit, send them the report as it is, including readings, photos and any inaccessible sections.
Keep certificates, reports and readings in one place so you can produce them quickly.
Signs you need TR19 inspection in Southwood
Grease builds up as cooking vapour cools inside the extract. It often collects where nobody can see it: the plenum, bends and horizontal runs.
Keep an eye out for these warning signs:
- Missing access panels found on survey
- Cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen
- Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
- Missing TR19 certificates or history
School kitchens, at schools like Southwood Infant School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.
Questions to ask before you book
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- Whether the price is fixed
- If they look at the system before pricing
- What records you’ll receive afterwards
Leave it or put it right?
An EHO visit, an insurance renewal or a fire risk assessment is a bad time to find your extract records are thin. An inspection now gives a site in Southwood a current picture. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.
Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.
Why us?
- A fixed price before any work starts
- Member of BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease
- Fully insured
- Each visit written up, with pictures
What the work involves, part by part
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Inspections are planned around mealtimes and holidays so meals are not affected.
Extract fan and discharge
The extract fan and its housing collect grease too. They’re included in the readings and pictures.
Multi-site and managed buildings
If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
How it works
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before any work starts, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. In a smaller place like Southwood, parking is rarely the issue, but tell us about gates, roof access and opening hours.
- We agree a time when the kitchen is closed or quiet.
- We look over the canopy, plenum, ducts, fan and discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured at set points by WFTT or DTT.
- Photos are taken at each point, and access gaps noted.
- The findings go into a report with readings, photos and a recommended next clean.
How to prepare
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
Ask for a quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

When it’s something else
To be straight with you, there are a few things this work will not fix:
- Fire safety duties beyond the extract system
- Sections with no access, until panels are fitted
- Mechanical faults in the extract
