TR19 inspection in Paddock
A grease test measures how thick the grease is inside a kitchen extract system. We use the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT), taking readings at set points. The results show whether the system needs cleaning and how soon. We are often asked to deal with ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits and pre-clean surveys before a first TR19 clean, across pre-clean surveys, insurer audits and post-clean checks.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
We’ve been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What we do, step by step
Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems, and we clear up before we go. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Paddock and turn up when the site is quiet.
- After the clean, we arrange a time to check the system.
- The same access points are opened up.
- We repeat the WFTT or DTT readings.
- We photograph each area to record how it was left.
- The results are reported, with anything missed flagged.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
- Clear the space around the work
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Multi-site and managed buildings
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
Do you need TR19 inspection in Paddock?
You can’t judge grease thickness by eye. Clean filters can hide a heavy layer behind them, which is why readings matter.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen
- Checking the result of a recent clean
- Systems cleaned on a calendar with no measurements
- Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Challock Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
Before you book anyone
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- Whether a survey comes first
- What hours they’ll be on site
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach

What staff can safely do
A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.
Fixed quotes for TR19 inspection in Paddock
We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:
- How big the system is
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- The times the site is available
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.
What we need to know
When you call or email, it’s useful to have:
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- A few general shots of the system
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
- The postcode and the type of business
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.
Paddock: your questions answered
Which fire authority looks after Paddock?
Kent Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Paddock. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.
Will you come out to Paddock?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
When should we have our next grease test?
Each report recommends when to test and clean next, taking the readings and the kitchen’s hours into account. The interval should come from a competent person’s risk assessment backed by grease measurement.
What accreditations do you have?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule and quote for it.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. We always survey first, either from photos and details you send or on a site visit. Then you get a fixed quote.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. TR19® isn’t law; it’s BESA’s specification. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which requires the responsible person to reduce fire risk, and insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you’ll get one fixed quote.
Kitchen extracts in Paddock
Food Standards Agency data counts about 5 restaurants, cafés and canteens within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Paddock. For any of them with a canopy, measuring grease is better than guessing when to clean. Paddock is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. In Paddock, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Ashford council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.
Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Paddock is William Harvey Hospital, about 5.8 miles south-east. Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Cosmas and St Damian or anywhere around Paddock, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

What TR19 inspection can’t fix
TR19 inspection can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:
- Parts of the duct nobody can reach yet
- Design faults in the extract system
- Fire safety duties beyond the extract system
If you are not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

Looking after it afterwards
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Flag changes in how much frying the kitchen does
- Keep the route to access panels clear
- Clean grease off the canopy between professional cleans
- Book the next test on the date in the report
After post-clean verification, file the results with the cleaning certificate. The pair gives a clear record of the clean and the check.
Keep certificates, reports and readings in one place so you can produce them quickly.
