About our TR19 inspection in Old Basing
If you’ve taken over a kitchen in Old Basing and don’t know when the extract was last cleaned, an inspection is the place to start. We survey the system, measure the grease and tell you what needs doing, before any cleaning is booked. We are often asked to deal with systems that need surveying before cleaning and kitchens taken over with no cleaning records, across wet film thickness tests, post-clean checks and deposit thickness tests.
For a smaller kitchen near Old Basing, a TR19® clean is the same job as anywhere: canopy, filters, plenum, duct, fan and discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Between visits
Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Never cook with filters missing
- Keep canopy edges and gutters wiped down
- Keep to the recommended interval
- Keep access panels clear and unpainted
Where sections couldn’t be reached, the report says where access panels would help. Fitting them before the next clean means the whole system gets done.
Clean, correctly fitted filters stop more grease reaching the duct. Missing or damaged filters let grease straight into the plenum.
Old Basing questions
Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Old Basing?
Food hygiene inspections in Old Basing are carried out by Basingstoke and Deane council. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
Do you work in villages like Old Basing?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
At what point does grease need cleaning?
The TR19® Grease figures are a mean of 200 microns or less between cleans, and immediate spot cleaning wherever a reading hits 500 microns. We show your readings against those figures.
Do you check other contractors’ cleans?
A post-clean check records grease readings and pictures after the work, for our cleans and other firms’ alike.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes, if we can see what we need. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, then a fixed quote.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. TR19® isn’t law; it’s BESA’s specification. The law is the Fire Safety Order 2005, under which the responsible person must manage fire risk, and TR19® is what insurers and fire officers look to.
What does a pre-clean survey involve?
We look at the system from canopy to discharge, take grease readings and check access. It lets us plan the clean and send you a fixed quote.
What’s TR19?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.
What staff can safely do
If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Different parts, different methods
Extract fan and discharge
Grease builds up on the fan blades and inside the housing. They’re included in the readings and photos.
Vertical risers
Access to risers is often limited. The survey shows exactly what access there is.
What happens if it’s left?
Without readings, you are guessing when to clean. If grease reaches 500 microns anywhere, TR19® Grease calls for immediate spot cleaning, which you won’t know without measuring. A visit arranged in advance is far less disruptive than a callout on a busy day.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711 or email us for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Old Basing kitchens: local notes
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 24 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 4 takeaways and sandwich shops within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Old Basing. Where they cook under a canopy, a grease reading is the way to tell whether the extract is due a clean. Old Basing is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Food hygiene inspections in Old Basing are the job of Basingstoke and Deane council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (The Vyne is about 3.3 miles north-west), access may need planning. Where a hall near Church of St Mary, or anywhere in Old Basing, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Multi-site and managed buildings
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.
Signs you need TR19 inspection in Old Basing
When a site in Old Basing changes owner or cleaning contractor, the records don’t always follow. Without them, nobody knows how much grease is in the system or when it was last cleaned.
Most sites get in touch when they notice one of these:
- Cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen
- Sections of duct that can’t be reached
- Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
- Checking the result of a recent clean
If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital about 3 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
What to look for in a quote
- What paperwork you get at the end
- What hours they’ll be on site
- What’s included in the scope, part by part
- If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
How the visit works
At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. For a place like Old Basing, we load the van from the survey notes so the work can be done in one visit where possible.
- First we look at the system’s cleaning history, if there is one.
- We follow the extract from canopy to discharge.
- Access panels are located and any missing ones noted.
- We measure the grease and photograph each point.
- You get a report and a fixed quote for the clean.
Before we arrive
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Clear the space around the work
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
How to get a quote
We don’t publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.
