About our TR19 inspection in Northwood
BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals by daily use: heavy use (12 to 16 hours a day) every 3 months, moderate use (6 to 12 hours) every 6 months and light use (2 to 6 hours) every 12 months. Grease testing shows whether your kitchen needs cleaning more often than that. We’re often asked to deal with cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen and insurers asking for TR19 evidence, on deposit thickness tests, insurer audits and wet film thickness tests.
Work in a small place like Northwood starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

For landlords and multi-site operators
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Northwood and across the Isle of Wight. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.
Common problems we fix in Northwood
Grease builds up as cooking vapour cools inside the extract. The thickest layers can sit out of sight in the plenum, at bends and along flat runs.
The symptoms we’re asked about most are:
- Parts of the system left out of past cleans
- Kitchens whose menu or hours have changed
- Systems that need surveying before cleaning
- Heavy grease suspected in the plenum or ducts
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near All Saints' Church or elsewhere in Northwood, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether VAT is included
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them

Your questions about TR19 inspection in Northwood
Can school kitchens in Northwood be cleaned in the holidays?
Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. The FSA’s register shows about 6 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Northwood. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your term dates and we will plan around them.
Do you work in villages like Northwood?
Yes. Northwood is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you will get one fixed quote.
Can you quote from pictures?
In many cases, yes. With good photos, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
Where does the waste go?
We contain it and take it with us. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go, so it does not spread.
What does TR19 mean?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping, and it takes a risk-based approach.
Why survey before a clean?
The survey covers the whole system, grease readings and access to each section. From it, we plan the clean and quote a fixed price.
How often should a kitchen extract be inspected?
We suggest a next test date in every report, based on the readings and how the kitchen is used. A risk assessment based on measured grease should set the interval.
What the work involves, part by part
Canopy and plenum
Clean-looking filters do not mean a clean plenum. That’s why we test behind them.
Horizontal duct runs
Sections without access are recorded so it can be fixed before the clean.
What TR19 inspection can’t fix
Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:
- A faulty or failing extract fan
- The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
- Ductwork that was designed or installed badly
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.
What the work covers
- Deposit thickness tests
- Wet film thickness tests
- Insurer audits
- Post-clean checks
- Pre-clean surveys
- Access surveys
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.
TR19 inspection in Northwood: the local picture
The coast is only about 2 miles from Northwood. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 20 pubs and bars and about 8 hotels and B&Bs within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Northwood. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Northwood is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Northwood (Osborne House is about 2 miles east), fitting access panels needs care. Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Northwood is St Mary's Hospital, about 2.4 miles south.
Northwood is about 1 mile south of Cowes, in the Isle of Wight. Whether your site is in the middle of Northwood or further out, TR19 inspection is available to all kinds of commercial premises, from a single unit to a large public building. Northwood is one of 125 towns, villages and districts in the Isle of Wight where we work for commercial clients. We also work in Portsmouth, around 11 miles away.
TR19 inspection in PO31 follows the same survey, fixed quote and written report as everywhere else we cover. That includes premises on Nodes Road, Wyatts Lane and Uplands Road and nearby roads. Close by, we work in Rew Street (1 mile west), Gurnard (1 mile north), Cowes (1 mile north), Noke Common (2 miles south) and Parkhurst (2 miles south). Within a short drive, we also cover Newport (3 miles south), Ryde (7 miles east), Sandown (9 miles south-east), Shanklin (10 miles south-east), Ventnor (11 miles south-east) and Oakfield (7 miles east). Island and remote sites take a little more planning, so tell us where you are when you ask for a quote for TR19 inspection.
Landmarks near Northwood
Typical jobs here are in premises near Cowes Enterprise College and The Travellers Joy pub, among other places. Other landmarks nearby include Isle of Wight Natural History Centre (0.5 miles north) and West Cowes Castle (1.7 miles north). Not far away are Mill Hill and Briddlesford Nature Reserve.
Why deal with it now?
Finding a hotspot early means a targeted spot clean rather than a bigger problem later. Left alone, grease keeps building between cleans. In a place like Northwood, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.
One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. You’ll have a fixed price before we start.

How it works
Every visit runs to the same pattern: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Northwood can be planned properly.

- The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
