TR19 inspection in Hucking

Managing agents and facilities teams in Hucking

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with photos.

How we handle TR19 inspection in Hucking

A grease test measures how thick the grease is inside a kitchen extract system. Readings are taken at set points using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). From the numbers, you can see whether cleaning is due. Common call-outs are for uncertainty over how often to clean and sections of duct that can’t be reached, across pre-clean surveys, post-clean checks and wet film thickness tests.

For a kitchen in or near Hucking, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

Honest limits

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • Mechanical faults in the extract
  • Heavy deposits found on test, which still need cleaning
  • Sections with no access, until panels are fitted

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think.

The process

Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. In a small place like Hucking, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. First we book a time that will not disrupt cooking.
  2. The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
  3. We take WFTT or DTT readings at set points along the system.
  4. Photos are taken at each point, and access gaps noted.
  5. You get a report with readings, pictures and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Let us know about parking and loading

Getting a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Your questions about TR19 inspection in Hucking

Can you work in Hucking outside opening hours?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The site is handed back ready to open. Let us know the hours you are closed and we will book within them.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Hucking?

Kitchens in Hucking are inspected by Maidstone council’s environmental health officers. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

What is TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

What should I send you?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few pictures and any previous report.

How much notice do you need?

For planned work, earlier is better, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

How often should grease be tested?

Each report recommends when to test and clean next, taking the readings and the kitchen’s hours into account. A risk assessment based on measured grease should set the interval.

How much time does an inspection need?

It takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. The visit is timed so cooking isn’t disrupted.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

We never leave them off the paperwork. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

Part by part

Schools, hospitals and care homes

We fit testing around service times and school holidays to avoid disruption.

Canopy and plenum

Clean-looking filters do not mean a clean plenum. So we measure behind the filters, not just in front.

Between visits

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs
  • Flag changes in how much frying the kitchen does
  • Book the next test on the date in the report
  • Keep access panels clear and unpainted

For an insurer audit, send them the report as it is, with readings, pictures and any areas not accessible.

Fit access panels where the survey finds sections can’t be reached, so every part of the duct can be cleaned.

Hucking kitchens: local notes

In Hucking, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Maidstone council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Hucking sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as KIMS hospital (about 3.8 miles west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Leeds Castle is about 3.2 miles south), access may need planning. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Margaret or elsewhere in Hucking, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

What happens if it’s left?

If a kitchen in Hucking has been cleaned on the same calendar for years, there’s no way to know if that interval is right without measuring. Testing gives you the evidence to set it properly. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
