TR19 inspections in Fairlight
For TR19 inspections and grease testing in Fairlight, one call is all it takes, from survey to sign-off. CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, ISO 9001 and fully insured.
- Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
- Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
- An insurer’s request for a TR19 audit
What the work involves, part by part
Schools, hospitals and care homes
We fit testing around service times and school holidays to avoid disruption.
Vertical risers
Risers carry the extract up through the building. Grease can run down and collect at the base, so we check there.
How we handle TR19 inspection in Fairlight
BESA sets minimum cleaning intervals by daily use: every 3 months for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day, every 6 months for moderate use of 6 to 12 hours, and every 12 months for light use of 2 to 6 hours. Grease testing shows whether your kitchen needs cleaning more often than that. The work covers pre-clean surveys, deposit thickness tests and post-clean checks, and the jobs we see most are extracts that have never been grease tested and pre-clean surveys before a first TR19 clean.
Work in a small place like Fairlight starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

The process
Our technicians bring everything the work needs, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Fairlight run smoothly.
- We agree a time when the kitchen is closed or quiet.
- The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
- We take WFTT or DTT readings at set points along the system.
- Photos are taken at each point, and access gaps noted.
- The findings go into a report with readings, photos and a recommended next clean.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Clear loose items from the work area
Getting a quote
Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
Related advice
What affects the quote in Fairlight
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We look at:
- The number of sites or systems
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- Parking and loading at the site
- The condition we find in the survey
What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before we start.
What to send for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:
- Any previous report or certificate
- Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
Quotes are quick. Send a few details and pictures, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Fairlight: your questions answered
Who inspects food businesses in Fairlight?
In Fairlight, it’s Rother council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
Do you clean school canteen extracts around Fairlight out of term?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. There are about 2 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Fairlight. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.
Do you check other contractors’ cleans?
We visit after a clean, take readings at set points and photograph the system. Any areas that weren’t cleaned properly are flagged.
How much notice do you need?
The more notice, the better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes usually come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
What do the grease readings need to be?
Between cleans, the mean should stay at 200 microns or below, with 500 microns or more anywhere needing immediate spot cleaning.
Is TR19 cleaning the law?
No. TR19® is BESA’s specification and the industry benchmark, not legislation. The law is the Fire Safety Order 2005, under which the responsible person must manage fire risk, and TR19® is what insurers and fire officers look to.
Why act early in Fairlight
If there’s a fire or a claim, your insurer may ask for TR19 records. Without them, a claim can be reduced or refused. Getting an inspection done now starts that paper trail. A planned visit to Fairlight is easier to arrange than an emergency callout.
Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

Grease, kitchens and Fairlight
At about 1 mile from the coast, Fairlight is close enough for sea air to matter. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. Food Standards Agency records list about 6 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 6 sandwich bars and takeaways in Fairlight and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they cook under a canopy, a grease reading is the way to tell whether the extract is due a clean. Fire safety in Fairlight falls to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Conquest Hospital is the nearest hospital to Fairlight, about 3.4 miles west. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near The Parish Church of St Andrew, or anywhere in Fairlight, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as The Hastings Academy or anywhere near Fairlight, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
Looking after it afterwards
Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:
- Keep access panels clear and unpainted
- Wipe the canopy surfaces regularly
- File every inspection report with your certificates
- Send TR19 audit reports to your insurer on request
After the inspection, we send a report showing each reading, its location and pictures. File it alongside your TR19 certificates.
Fit access panels where the survey finds sections can’t be reached, so every part of the duct can be cleaned.
