TR19 inspection for kitchens and businesses in Crow
Many insurers ask for proof that kitchen extract systems are cleaned and inspected to TR19®. Missing records can lead to a claim being reduced or refused. A TR19 audit sets out the system’s condition, with readings and pictures, for sites in Crow and the rest of Hampshire. If you are dealing with insurance renewals needing proof of TR19 cleaning and ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits, we can help.
Somewhere as small as Crow, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.
The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What happens on the day
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Crow, let us know and we will plan around it.
- The visit is arranged for when the kitchen isn’t busy.
- The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
- We take WFTT or DTT readings at set points along the system.
- Each test point and any access problems are photographed.
- You get a report with readings, photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
Getting a quote
Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.

Questions from Crow
Can you get to a site in Crow?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Crow is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Which council inspects kitchens in Crow?
That’s New Forest council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Crow. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
How long does a TR19 inspection take?
An inspection takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. Sites with several canopies take longer, and you can ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line to book it in.
What about areas you can’t get to?
We never leave them off the paperwork. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.
What does TR19 mean?
A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
What is a WFTT or DTT grease test?
Readings are taken using the Wet Film Thickness Test or the Deposit Thickness Test, then compare them with the TR19® Grease figures.
Where does the waste go?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.
How much notice do you need?
For planned work, earlier is better, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.
Between visits
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Keep canopy edges and gutters wiped down
- Store grease readings where your insurer can see them
- Never cook with filters missing
- Book the next test on the date in the report
The report recommends when the system should next be cleaned and tested, based on the readings and how the kitchen is used.
Test grease regularly instead of relying on the calendar. It spots changes in how fast grease builds.
What the work involves, part by part
Extract fan and discharge
Grease builds up on the fan blades and inside the housing. They’re included in the readings and pictures.
Canopy and plenum
The plenum behind the filters can carry a lot of grease. Readings and pictures are taken in the plenum as part of every survey.
Leave it or put it right?
If a kitchen in Crow has been cleaned on the same calendar for years, there’s no way to know if that interval is right without measuring. Testing gives you the evidence to set it properly. If the system at a site near Crow fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

TR19 inspection in Crow: the local picture
Food Standards Agency records include about 5 bars, pubs and nightclubs within about 1.5 miles of central Crow. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Crow. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Kitchens in Crow get their food hygiene inspections from New Forest council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
School kitchens, at schools like Ringwood Junior School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Historic houses near Crow, such as Avon Tyrrell House about 2.4 miles south-east, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.

How we price TR19 inspection
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We look at:
- The times the site is available
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- The scale of the work
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.
What we need to know
You don’t need the technical terms. Just send:
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- A few general shots of the system
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- The site address and the type of premises
To help us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few photos and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, call 0345 646 2711 or email us.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Do you need TR19 inspection in Crow?
Grease is fuel. A flare-up on the range can be drawn into the canopy and duct, and from there a fire can spread through the ductwork. Knowing how much there is lets you act before it becomes a hazard.
The symptoms we are asked about most include:
- Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
- Surveys needed before quoting a full clean
- Kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings
- Uncertainty over how often to clean
Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Crow is St Leonard's Hospital, about 4.3 miles west.
What your quote should include
- What’s included in the scope, part by part
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Whether the price is fixed
- Whether they’re fully insured
