About kitchen extract cleaning in IG10
A closed kitchen isn’t earning, so the timing of a clean matters. Cleans are booked for evenings, overnight or weekends, or during holidays where a site closes for them. With the equipment off and cool and the area sheeted, we clean and hand the kitchen back ready for the next service. Typical jobs include poor airflow at the canopy and ductwork thick with old, hardened grease, on vertical risers, discharge points and plenums and filters.
We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your pictures. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.
- We survey the system first, from your photos and details or on a site visit.
- Grease readings are taken at set points and you get a fixed quote.
- Once the kitchen has closed and the equipment has cooled, we sheet and protect the area.
- We clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- Readings and photos are taken again, and you receive a TR19 certificate and photo report.

Kitchen extracts across IG10
Kitchens across IG10 cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.
From central London kitchens to coastal hotels and country pubs, London and the South East have every kind of site. The same TR19® standard applies to all of them, in IG10 and beyond.
Loughton: A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St. John's Church or elsewhere in Loughton, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. School kitchens, at schools like The Alderton Infant School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.
When something else is needed
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- Extraction that cannot cope with the cooking because of its design
- A fan motor or bearings that have failed (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
- Damaged duct sections that need replacing
How we price kitchen extract cleaning
We don’t publish a price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
- The condition we find in the survey
- Parking and loading at the site
What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.
Helping us quote
We can often survey from photos. Try to include:
- Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To start, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.
Why deal with it now?
Grease that is left only gets thicker. BESA guidance says the mean should not go above 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. Heavy build-up takes longer to remove than regular cleans.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether they recommend a next date
- How VAT is shown on the quote
- Whether they’re fully insured
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
Keeping the system healthy
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:
- Tell us when the extract starts to drip or smell
- Book the next clean before the date on the report
- Keep the cleaning records where you can find them
- Keep the extract on whenever the range is lit
If we couldn’t get into part of the duct, the report says so plainly. A TR19 report should record what wasn’t cleaned as well as what was, and we can fit access panels so it’s reached next time.
Regular filter cleaning is the simplest thing a kitchen can do. Clean, well-fitted filters catch more fat before it reaches the duct, which slows build-up further down the system.
Why it fails
How fast grease builds up depends mostly on how long the kitchen cooks each day. Under BESA guidance, heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day means a clean at least every 3 months, moderate use every 6 months and light use every 12. They are minimums: measured grease levels set the real interval.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- Missing paperwork after a change of operator
- Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
- Grease drips onto cooking equipment
- An overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer
Common questions in IG10
How often should a kitchen extract be cleaned?
BESA guidance sets minimums by daily cooking hours: every 3 months for 12 to 16 hours, 6 months for 6 to 12 hours and 12 months for 2 to 6 hours. Measured grease levels set the real interval.
Will the clean disrupt our service?
When the kitchen is closed, at whatever time suits you. We need the equipment cool, and we leave the kitchen ready to cook.
Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.
Do insurers need proof of extract cleaning?
Grease-filled ducts can carry fire well beyond the kitchen. Many policies say the extract must be cleaned to TR19, and a claim may be reduced without proof, so keep every certificate.
What does a TR19 kitchen extract clean include?
The whole system: the canopy, the plenum behind the filters, the filters, horizontal ducts, vertical risers, the fan and the discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Anything we cannot reach is recorded on the report.
Will I get a certificate after the clean?
A TR19 certificate, plus a full photo report. The report lists what was cleaned, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next clean is due.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, depending on what the system needs.
