What we install

  • Wall and island canopies
  • Grease filters and plenums
  • Extract ductwork and risers
  • Extract fans
  • Access panels, fitted from the start
  • Odour control equipment, where the site needs it

We supply and fit complete systems for new kitchens and refits, and replace individual parts such as a canopy or fan when the rest of the system is sound.

Designed to be cleaned

We spend our working lives cleaning kitchen extracts, and we see the same problems again and again: ducts with too few access panels, sections that can’t be reached, fans that can’t be opened, and canopies that are hard to clean. A system that can’t be cleaned properly will never get a full TR19 certificate, and grease will build up in the parts nobody can reach.

So we design installations with cleaning in mind. Access panels go where they’re needed from day one, and fans and plenums are placed so they can be reached safely. That makes every future clean quicker and more complete.

We also think about the people who will use it every day. Filters that can be lifted out easily get cleaned more often. Canopies with smooth, easy-to-wipe surfaces stay cleaner between visits. Grease gutters that drain properly don’t drip on the range. Small details like these make the system easier to look after for years.

Standards

BESA publishes DW172, its specification for kitchen ventilation systems, covering design and installation. TR19® Grease is BESA’s separate specification for cleaning kitchen extract systems. A good installation keeps both in mind: it should work well and be cleanable. Our article on TR19 and DW172 explains the difference.

Depending on the building and the route of the duct, other rules may apply, such as planning permission for ducts on the outside of a building or fire-resisting construction where ducts pass through walls and floors. Check with your landlord and local council early, and we’ll work with your designer or building control where needed.

How an installation works

  1. We survey the kitchen, the cooking equipment and the route out of the building.
  2. We agree the layout of the canopy, duct, fan and any odour control with you.
  3. You get a fixed quote setting out what’s included.
  4. We install the system, working out of hours where the kitchen needs to keep running.
  5. The system is run and checked, and we hand it over with access points marked and a recommended cleaning schedule.

For a new kitchen, we can work with your builder, kitchen designer or shopfitter so the extract fits the programme. For a refit, we plan the work around your closure dates and agree what can be reused. Either way, we tell you what we need from you and when, so the kitchen opens on time.

Starting clean, staying clean

A new system is the easiest one to keep clean. We’ll recommend a cleaning interval based on your expected hours of cooking and BESA’s minimum frequencies, and we can set you up on a maintenance contract from the start. Grease readings at the first few cleans will show whether the interval is right.

At handover, we give you a simple record of the system: the canopy, filters, duct route, fan and the position of every access panel. That record makes every future clean quicker and helps anyone who looks after the system know what’s there. Keep it with your fire safety records, alongside the TR19 certificates that will follow.

Replacing parts of an older system

Not every kitchen needs a whole new system. Sometimes the canopy is too small for new cooking equipment, the fan is failing, or the duct needs more access. We’ll tell you honestly whether a partial upgrade will do the job, and quote for it. See extract fan repair and replacement and access panel installation.

If your current system can’t be cleaned properly because of poor access, adding panels may be enough. If the duct is damaged, badly routed or too small for the cooking, we’ll explain the options and what each would involve.

What it costs

We don’t publish prices. It depends on the size of the kitchen, the cooking equipment, the duct route, the fan, any odour control and the access. We’ll survey and give you a fixed quote.

Commercial kitchen extraction installation: common questions

Do you design and install complete kitchen extract systems?

Yes. We supply and fit canopies, filters, ductwork, fans and access panels, and odour control where the site needs it.

Can you replace just the canopy or fan?

Yes, where the rest of the system is sound. We’ll tell you if a partial upgrade will do the job.

Do I need planning permission?

It depends on the building and the duct route. External ducts often need it. Check with your local council early, and we’ll work with your designer where needed.

Will the new system be easy to clean?

Yes. We fit access panels where they’re needed from the start, so every future clean can cover the whole system.

Can you install while we’re still trading?

We plan installations around your opening hours where possible, working out of hours to keep the kitchen running.
